I had similar problems with shrimps, but that was due to the tank temperature...

actually your experience could also mean that the long fin genes is recessive, i.e. the short fin parent could have a recessive long fin gene

The tank temperature is about 77 F, don't have the readings for the rest though. I've been changing about 10%-20% of the water everyday.
