The 173s indeed look genuine 173
But to me, unfortunately mostly look males based on the pictures shown, despite them not caving as you reported.
Any new updates on their pictures?
Thanks

Re: Breeding a special Yellow Hypancistrus sp L333
Thanks Mr Haakon, I 100% agree with your deduction. The male still somehow retained 90% of its nice pattern and coloration but due to them being kept in dark background tank. But if it is placed in a light coloured tub the colour will return fully. Anyway, the group's fry did maintain a uniform deep...

Re: Unknown Hypancistrus sp. - Orinoco basin
Nice specimen from a known locality with already given L-number, could be the "Emperor" version of that number, not necessarily a different species. So in this case, for the one posted by unungy could be the "emperor/mega crown" version of L340. emperor or mega crown version, i b...

what i suggest is, if you are not sure of what you are buying, consult some of your friends who are good in that fish to confirm before purchasing or at least read up more on them.

Re: two supposed "L201" pleco
both are L201.
Look at the small spottings on the caudal. H. contradens have uniformly sized spottings all over the body and finnages.
On top of that, the Caudal shape is consistent with L201 Caudal shape.
H. contradens caudal shape is more like L333 caudal shape.

Re: Breeding a special Yellow Hypancistrus sp L333
Janne and HaakonH did suggest that the nice one is L236 but according to Pleco22, it is an aberration of L333. This is indeed a very controversial topic but i try to breed with a female with the same body shape instead of pattern and of course and L-number closest to it, which is L333. The nice male...

Re: What kind of Hypancistrus? L173 fry update
I see L173 to be Hypancistrus looking like zebra pleco but bigger, with distinct wavy lines, golden eyes and seldom with spottings. With all due respect, i am afraid to say that the fry that you posted do not look like L173 at all in any aspect. What you posted are Hypancistrus with rather stout (no...

i can be sure that they are not L411,
L411 would look like L260 more, with thin white/grey broken lines close to each other.

Re: Hypancistrus sp."Mimic"
Hi HaakonH and Pleco 22, I do own a couple of these, wild, i classify them under L400. Is it ok to place them under L400? They came in with big L400 at 3.5 to 4.5 inches. That was why i label them as L400, however, this new thread brought some light and i begin to suspect they are not. They have thi...
