can silicone caulk be unsafe?
For my 2500 gal indoor pond (in my basement), I've been putting together an alternative filter using a regular 96-gal gardage toter (from Lowes home improvement store). The plumbing guy at the store appeared quite experienced and taught me how to put in inlets and outlets in the toter cheaply, safel...

Re: alternative filter media
Thanks Mats! Ok, I've just bought 100 US gal worth of pot scrubbers (red, blue, yellow, orange, green, and purple) for a huge filter I am rigging out of a garbage toter (to service 2500 gal indoor pond in my basement). They came 6 per package with very, very little info on the package from our local...

Re: alternative filter media
Gents, Ladies, A couple of questions for seasoned collegues. Any general and especially kitchen cleaning supplies like sponges, scrubbers, scourers, etc. ARE often treated with or coated with or contain imbedded bactericidal chemicals. (1) How would one know if they are or if they are not treated? C...

Re: The hybrid Syno thread
Hi Jools, I may be wrong but for now I presume you are confusing two different fishes of mine - my latest email (which was the late, after-thought reply to your first email to me) was concerned with the fish I initially named longirostris and you said with an apparent certainty that it is an ocellif...

Re: The hybrid Syno thread
Richard B. was the first to suggest that in the original post "whats my cat?" Jools agrees: see email thread: Hi Viktor, The point I think is that S. galinae isn't itself genuine and is a marketed form of S. eupterus. No idea if it is a hybrid or just selective breeding, but I think it sho...

Re: The hybrid Syno thread
Forgot to mention, the bigger galinae (?) has a somewhat deformed, assymetric head and mouth - birth trauma, injury, or something. Of course, I do not know, I got him only a month ago from a private owner.

Re: unsure about identity
Ok. He is about 3 inches. Please, see if these are useful (never mind the white marks on his body - my alligator gar left these on him, which was the last straw and I transferred him to a smaller, safe tank two days ago; pics are of this Sat morning). Re: unsure about identity
All right! Today morning, I had to transfer the suspected S. decora along with about a dozen other small and smallish fish from my 120-gal tank, where they started to get picked on by larger tankmates, to my 27-gal hex. Now, I can see him quite well. Yes! The two maxillary barbels ARE branched - the...

Re: unsure about identity
Gentlemen, ladies, very nice discussion, especially for the benefit of my ignorant self. Thank you for the education. To Richard B.: is there a typo in your message or am I confused? Maxillary barbels are at the mouth sides. Mandibular ones are on the chin. Right? Pic 6 from Cat-eLog shows strong br...

Re: unsure about identity
To Mats: thank you. the pic numbers that may evoke suspicion in my novice and untrained eye are 2, 7 and 11. (#16 is wrong all together - a bug?) BTW, Richard B. thinks my guy is a true S. decora (though you never said he was not :) ). To Richard B.: thank you. Yes, the four lower-lip barbels are br...

Re: unsure about identity
So it is NOT a true decora. I reviewed the pics in Cat-eLog and you are right (of course :) - I have not noticed it right away but most of them do have a long string-like extention on the dorsal fin, although there are a couple of shots where it is absent and these fish look a bit different from the...

Re: unsure about identity
MatsP, thank you! The pieces of the puzzle start falling into places. What you say is even more reasonable - the fishshop people I got these from were not told/did not know what their exact names are. Now, how about this one, is it a pure S. Decora? (was sold just as "banded" - the store w...

Re: unsure about identity
Thank you! This sounds very reasonble to me. So the one I thought euptera is the right one.
Would you have guesses to any of the four parents of the two hybrids? In case it may be helpful - couple more shots.
Viktor

unsure about identity
Hi all! Could anybody, who knows for sure, tell me what these synos of mine are? The one I am suspecting is eupterus was sold as a "featherfin", another was sold as a longirostrus (but is it?); and the third was identified simply as "spotted" - my guess it is notatus.
