Sexing L129 Hypancistrus debilittera

Good day, everyone! I'd like to get your opinions of possible gender mix on the following group of five wild caught Hypancistrus debilittera . These are the same fish pictured in both images. They are roughly 2 inches to 2.25 inches total length (5.1 cm to 5.7 cm). I am inexperienced with Hypancistr...

Re: Hard Water Plec ideas

Well, this one isn't so colorful, but my Hypancistrus sp(l066) has done well in my exceptionally hard water and high pH. Same with my Hypancistrus sp(l260) . Sorry, those aren't black/yellow/colorful, but they are striking in my opinion. (I couldn't keep my "Gold Nuggets" alive.) PS... edi...

Re: Queen Arabesque Not Eating

My L260s don't eat when I can observe them, either. I drop sinking foods for them at night. By morning the foods are gone and I have the visual evidence of their consumption via pleco feces.

Is any of the food consumed, or is it left to waste?

As I type in this text screen, I'll get a broken red line under a word that is spelled incorrectly as my prompt to fix it. Is that 'dictionary' somehow linked to my computer OS, or to my browser, or to some text editor that I can control, or is that dictionary linked to the PlanetCatfish site? The r...

Not sure if anyone answered this directly. Genera act as categories that tie closely related species together. Genera can be defined in any way as the original person describing it wants and are largely arbitrary categories. In any case, in the original description of a genus (or any taxonomic leve...

What's the logic - panaque, ancistrini, peckoltia...

Ok, so I read through the "common names" versus "scientific names" thread, and figured I'd try to enlighten myself a bit. Here's what I've always wondered, and pardon me if it's spelled out somewhere plain as day but I didn't find an explanation on this site.... What is the logic...

Re: Source flubendazole in the United States?

I had no idea about the warmer water with Assassins. I've got them in temps about 81* F and no issues. ..Yet. I guess I should keep a watch on them, though. Anyway - to your original point. The fluben is in a product called Wormer Plus (the ones the Discus breeders use) -- I haven't the slightest cl...

Re: Source flubendazole in the United States?

Sorry, I don't know about a source in the US. Pest snails are an aggravation for sure. I finally got some Assassin snails and they've got the population significantly under control. If you're wanting to rescape using stuff from the snail infested tank into other tanks, can you do a potassium permang...

L066 gender, please

I don't know if it will be possible to determine gender based on these photos or not. I have a terrible time with macro settings on my camera, and I don't have any other L066 to put for comparison. I will say, though, that there's no real significant odontodes at the cheeks. And this pleco has a fai...

Considering I was naive and had to ask how leeches show up in an aquarium, I may not be your best source. But I do believe that leeches can transmit blood-borne parasites from one fish to another. Not knowing what type of environment these leaches were in when they hitch-hiked into your aquarium wou...

L264 Sultan Pleco - is there any truth to "venom"?

I've been pondering picking up a trio of Sultan Pleco (L264) and like any decision, I'm reading/thinking/reading some more. And in my search of information, I came across this: "It is assumed that the large, retractable tooth, the vampire tooth that gave these fish their name, is used to inject...

Hey Mats, I'm not thinking either the Type1 or the Type2 are L75. I've had several and still keep one of them, and the tail had rather uniformly sized and distributed black spots whereas the type 2 in your picture appears to have a solid tail. And while the black spots started smaller at the head an...

Sweet! Enjoy!

I had to do a double-take to check your location. Being here in the US, I equate "mushroom season" with the much coveted morel mushroom. In my part of Indiana, that typically is toward the last week of April. And boy is it a treat to find a good mess of them!
