Apparently these larger snouts are to be found in (sexually) mature males; they are used to impress or even to fight other males (afaik!!).Martin S wrote:Thanks Ben - does the snout grow with age then? Your video shows a specimen with a short snout?
Is Compsaraia compsa an old name for Parapteronotus hasemani?

Shane: would love a copy of that publication( is it french?) you attached if there's a way to purchase it and its not too expensive? See my initial post for title and author. It is in Spanish (and English?). And - to my regret - copies of this publication are scarce and (thus?) expensive. There was...

Could you expand a bit more on this one? I can't find any reference to this species - except through Google, which refers back to this thread.naturalart wrote:Brown ghost (Sternacella schotti)
FishBase also doesn't list it, so I'm very curious.

I'm currently looking forward to the arrival of some Auchenipterichthys punctatus in the Netherlands. A real case of "long time, no see", because the first (and last) time I kept this species was in the eighties. Two specimens - which turned out to be a pair - as "stowaways" in a...

Re: The South-American Knifefishes thread
Here is a picture of one of my diggers/buriers, Gymnorhamphichthys rondoni. Not the best of pictures - these fish are very fast - , but you may get an impression. This one is feeding and they do so by putting their mouths into the substrate in a chicken-like manner. If things become too tense for wh...

The South-American Knifefishes thread
There is not very much information on this group, which is scientifically known as Gymnotiformes. According to Silurus (HH), only one book on them has ever been published (Electric Fishes of the Continental Waters of America, Mago-Leccia, 1994). Googling for images of S-Am Knifefishes results in an ...

How are the Ageneiosus doing atm? Settled in a little? Sorry for not reacting to your Discus story. Sadly, I found one of my otorongos dead last night - no idea why, was small but chunky, no obvious damage but must have been dead less than a day. That's sad and strange, especially because there's nothing to be seen which could explain its death.....Hope your other specimens will remain fine. I wi...

Hi Martin, They look good! This is a very nice species, especially when younger. Once old - like mine - they start to look like some kind of Stealth airplane, by which I mean that the fish's body parts seem out of proportion (large, flat head, skinny body) and don't seem to match anymore. Your tetra...

Hey Martin, My trio did well on live feeders. The pair died a few years ago and currently I only keep the remaining single male. I have wondered several times why it is still alive, because it looks like a swimming head. Mind you, this fish is about 15 years old. Yet, when possible, it will grab an ...

I still don't see the point in splitting Tatia and Centromochlus . Together they are a well diagnosed group with relatively few species. The two genera can only be told apart by experienced systematists with morphometrics and cleared and stained material to hand. Heck, even Vari & Ferraris (201...

It does rather, but the dark distal margin to the caudal is pretty distinctive in this fish though. Maybe part of the same species group? I'm a bit at a loss as to what a dark distal margin is, but if it has anything to do with a tail pattern (probably not....) it could also be Centromochlus macrac...

Is it the peace and quiet in the tank now that all characins have gone? Is it the effect of catappa leaves (tanned water and a natural environment)? Is it the company of guppys and their pheromones (not sure if other species should react to that, though)? Is it just the time of year? Or is it a comb...

As I'm unable to see the difference(-s) between T. brevis and T. venezuelae, I prefer to think this is T. brevis. Kept these on two separate occasions as individual and both times found them as bycatch in a shipment of Corydoras pygmaeus. Both brevis did well for some time and then suddenly simply d...

I'm sure must have juvies too, but the recent image update of a Trachycorystes juvenile is imho by no means a Trachycorystes but some Tatia species.
It concerns the latest picture addition, number 13.

it was imported from Brazil. Given that fact, could it not be a yet unknown Pimelodidae or Heptapteridae? And thus happened. The Hoplos are out and I was able to obtain a very nice knife fish species to take their place. I now keep three specimens of Gymnorhamphichthys rondoni and they are able to bury themselves in a sandy bottom completely. Sold as M-(edium)sized I expected fishes of about 5 to 7 cms,...

My Otorongos are definitely on their way back to improved health or - if you like - getting to some food. It amazes me that these tiny fishes were able to last so long on an absolute minimum, due to a lot of bulging tank mates, such as the Chanallabes sp. - which role has greedily been taking over b...
