It depends on diet and I've seen fish go back and forth. Don't quote me, but I think a more veggie-rich diet promotes the yellow.

Looks exactly like an ancistrus to me. Considering there were also albinos available, I can't think of any more likely candidate. Maybe the slightly "off" appearance is due to hybridization or just individual variability.

lower xingu has a square tail - this fish has a lyre tail of L400 or L399. I don't think it's 400, but 399 is a good possibility. Size matters, too. I don't have an ID, but I'll vote against l066 based on the non-lyre-tail and horizontal vs. vertical stripe pattern. This look closer to a 'lower xingu' than 66 or 333 that has more of a classic 'tiger' stripe pattern.

Tail doesn't look right to me to be L066. My first reaction was L236, but I'm fuzzy on the "lower Xingu" types. Could be the h sp. Santerum, too. I'm curious what other members think about it.

It's hard to qualify but in my mind it's very obviously not l82. The fish is short and compact with small spots vs long and slender with larger spots. This wouldn't be the first time a black/white fish was mislabeled. The worst I saw was a 8" l240 sold as lda33. Your fish sold as l82 would be right up there. I hope you didn't pay 82 prices - 82 is worth about 5-20x what an l201 is, depending on where you shop.

I don't see any reason why that fish couldn't be a well conditioned L201. It doesn't appear even extraordinarily large for either 201 or contradens. Remember that the catelog is in standard length, which doesn't include the caudal.
