Re: Panaque nocturnus

Hi Racoll, Why are the black, and brown-spotted phenotypes considered conspecific? ..the blunt answer I could offer would be because they can "change" their coloration quite a bit, at least according to my observations at importers. In this fish (as well as in L 351) it appears to depend a...

Re: Panaque nocturnus

Hi, note also that the original L 350 publication by DATZ came with a mouthshot (see the Matt´s link). And while I concede that that might be hard to see with such a compressed PDF-file, the original picture clearly shows the "non-Panaque" type dentition. So I am pretty sure that what we c...

Re: Panaque nocturnus

Hi Racoll, sorry for the confusing post. Daniel (hopefully) put it more understandably. My main point was, that L 351 cannot be Hemiancistrus pankimpuju because L 351 has the typical dentition of Panaque/Panaqolus, while H. pankimpuju has more numerous, two-tipped teeth. This same type of two-tipped...

Re: Panaque nocturnus

Hi Racoll, As I see it H. pankimpuju does not have an L number, L350 is P. nocturnus, and L351 would then be P. cf. nocturnus, if these proposed morphological differences stack up. ..but "the fish formerly known as L 350" has a non-Panaque (or Panaqolus) dentition. Teeth are more abundant ...

Re: Hypancistrus sp. "Platinum" aka "Corroncho Plata"

Hi Shane, the "problem" with Hypancistrus is, that it appears to be possible to produce virtually any cross between those forms. And (to my knowledge) none of them turned out to be infertile (which, admittedly, has not been checked thoroughly in most cases). The best documented cases are f...

Re: Spatuloricaria spp

Hi,

breeding of a Spatuloricaria sp. from Peru has been reported by Mike Hemmann in the (German) magazine "Amazonas", Issue 12.
The article appears to be freely available here:
http://www.amazonas-magazin.de/AMAZONAS ... 370.0.html.

Hope that helps,

Hi, the fish from Rio Tapajos is L 97! No matter what the collectors say, L 282 was introduced as being from Venezuela and therefore, only fish from that country "can" be termed L 282 (smuggled fish does not count!). Cheers, Sandor P.S.: There is also P. sp. "Alenquer" from the T...

Hi,

if this one came from Glaser declared as L 180 very recently, it is highly likely to be L 213 just as mine are.

Hi,

L 410 is known for its comparatively very large and deeply emarginate caudal fin.

Neither of these two criteria is visible in the pictures posted here, I am afraid..

Hi, So hanging an L number on every morph or variant is crazy. I´m sorry, but from this (and your answers above) I gather that you did not fully understand the concept of an L-Number. An L-Number is a picture of a fish (which should be not yet scientifically described and "sufficiently" di...

Hi, I do agree that the description of P. titan fits nicely with what we knew as L 418. On second look, however: what do we think of the distribution? L 418 is known from Rio Huallaga, a southern tributary to Rio Maranon, which in turn unites with Rio Ucayali "flowing north" to form the Ri...

Hi,

I guess you are referring to Ancistrus sp. "Blauauge" (=Blue eye).

This "species" has been found to be identical to Ancistrus sp. "L 88" some time ago and the pictures of it can be found under the latter entry in the eLog.

Hi, they appear to be an Oxyropsis species, based on body shape. These also come from Peru, and my current "best guess" is O. cf. wrightiana. I had a comparable case here: Ordered a group of fish listed as Oxyropsis sp., and got 8 H. gulare with 2 actual Oxyropsis "mixed in" (ori...
