In my experience it was more dangerous to the free swimmers dashing into it. The only thing I used lava rock for since was crushed up for a biological media.

Re: Congratulations Planet Catfish on reaching a milestone!
This is such a good resource, I think you could pull that off but I would suggest a grace period where viewers can make several visits to learn all that is available to them. Or can you add a tool that would serve as a tour through the site?

Conservation works well if it starts soon after a problem has been identified. Good article.

Being a bit of a purist, I think the proper thing to have done is to have big fish fry with it and use it as a lesson in the damage caused by invasive species. Introduced species of plants and animals are devastating habitats around the planet and should be strongly discouraged.

201 skin injury
I am learning that the hypancistrus play pretty rough and I have another that has lost a lot of skin on his back. Since it appears to be a common injury, in my experience, does he need to be quarantined and treated? A couple years ago, another 201 had more severe damage and he responded wonderfully ...

What kind of pleco is it? Maybe post a photo? Continue the water changes and try the Melafix, I have had very good luck using Melafix for physical damage on plecos.

Re: Scottish government is one step closer to "positive" species list
I believe there are rules that need to be in place but those rules will not work unless the targeted community gets involved. In the US, the public has an opportunity to participate in the rulemaking. If you know there are rules coming, get organized and get involved now before it gets out of hand.

they are great fish -- I have 5 in a 125 gal community tank. They are out and active most of the day and play nice with all the other fish. One has just staked a claim to a cave so I hope they show signs of breeding soon.

I have about 12 L-134 and the adults seem to prefer the 1 1/2" caves. Some of the smaller guys use the 1" and some like hiding places between and under rock and wood. I would think those are the females.

Looking at the amount of technical detail that go into the identification of a species, I wonder if all our C and L numbers are in the process of being described and named. My guess is that there are so many undescribed species that we should plan on using the numbers instead of genus and species na...

Re: How to get Farlowellas in the mood ;)
My farlowellas have been very active. This last clutch, I waited until I found the first hatched egg to move the rest to a hang-on breeder box. I lost some eggs to the tank doing this but I now have about 15 fry looking pretty good now about one week later. They have grown noticeably. Two Tank Amin ...

I have absolutely no experience with the issue but I question keeping fish on a boat. I think it would be incredibly stressful for them and I would not recommend it.
