A sad sad loss For me his genuine interest & enthusiasm for the animals he dealt with was key in our apprecation of him. He may not have acted appropriately for everyones taste, but he knew what the animals were capable of & interacted with them in a way which in reality probably made him qu...

substrate

Hi there You didn't say what type of sand you were considering. I have kept multis with plain gravel, coral sand & plain sand, without any problems. Coral sand has the advantage of assisting maintain "tanganyikan" water chemistry & as long as you don't use sand that is too fine whi...

I agree with Silurus - most likely S. Waterloti - a riverine species that i haven't personally kept in a lake set-up. They probably would adapt quite well though. A really nice fish that isn't seen here in the uk as often as it once was. I remember some large specimens causing a stir many years ago ...

catfish eating fish

Hi there It all depends on what species of catfish you have as to what is will or won't eat. Go into the cat-e-log and check out the video clip of the OGRE CATFISH - it really makes you think of what can be eaten & making sure tankmates are suitable. It is always hard to resist a fish you really...

Hi Sara & welcome to the site. Your fish is related to the pictus & is therefore some kind of south american 'pim'. This is not really my area of specialism but it would certainly consume fish small enough fom fit in it's mouth. I would suggest medium size tank mates, such as silver dollars,...

Graham - i have in the past, kept them with a variety of synos without any problems. (Schoutedeni, brichardi, caudalis, pleurops, contractus, multipunctatus & others) I prefer WS3 for white spot treatment, & have not had any issues with fish reacting to it. I always carefully calculate the d...

Graham - can i ask where you saw the S.Polli on the 15th?

If you don't want to show name the retailer in the forum you can email me. I am always wary of naming retailers openly in any circumstances as opinions are purely personal of what a great/good/not-so-good shop are.

Thanks Richard B

I agree - who knows what goes on, if people don't want to advertise it. With the probable exception of the giant catfish, RTC, TSN, Giraffe, Niger etc etc most fish, if available in the hobby, should be breedable by hobbyists if they want to. it's not that long ago that fish weren't bred simply beca...

Hi Sid & Graham - thanks for continuing the thread. Graham - the retailer was not local. I believe from your post, you know where it was. I travel a fair bit so did not consider it a LFS. Sid & Graham - the fish were bright, breathing ok, fins in natural orientation (not clamped). They spent...

I too look forward to seeing some photos. Sid it sounds like your Granny's will be better off than in the wild! (not quite the same volume of water but no predators!)

Hope everything goes smoothly for you.

Thanks for the response Sid - it is appreciated - i presumed most of what you'd confirmed but wanted a more educated opinion. I had a thought in the back of my mind about Granny's being a deepwater fish & possibly suffering from being bought up to the surface too quickly (similar to some fish wh...

Bloated/bouyant S.Granulosus

I went to a retail outlet over the weekend to view 2 Syno. Granulosus (a wild caught pair). The 2 individuals looked vastly different - the male was a long, lean individual whilst the female was a short stubbier specimen. They were in separate tanks but both appeared bloated with distended bellies, ...
