Re: Sexing Chaetostoma formosae

It is not related to size. Any sexually mature male will develop the lip and extended pelvic fins if they are healthy and females are present.

I think these will turn out to be L 448. At that size P. maccus have very distinct lines or stripes on their head.

Re: L191 Identification Question

I think you would need to reach out and ask for current photos of their actual fish. The above photos could simply be stock photos or even just photos they took from an internet search. You would also need to confirm where the fish were collected as Colombia exports several Panaque. Also who applied...

Re: Can cory-toxic kill other fish?

Sterbai22, Unfortunately, I am not sure that we will know what caused you to lose so many fish so quickly. If you ever encounter a similar situation here is what I suggest. The minute you observe any odd behaviour or find a dead fish in what has been a healthy, stable tank: 1) Check that filters are...

Re: Tank age and leaks

This tank was a gift from a friend's wife. She received it as a child in 1975. Still running after nearly 50 years. It is a paludarium now as it leaks at the very top if fully filled.

Re: Meet Chewy

Really it was only the wild bleeding hearts that left me a bit gutted. But as you point out Panaque for life. Chewy is 100% back to normal. The cloudy eyes (which had me worried) are all cleared up.

She is back to her normal belligerence.. attacking food before I can even let go of it.

[rubbernose as not getting too large, and love the idea they eat black algea as well] Unfortunately Chaetostoma come from cool, rushing mountain streams while Apistos come from warm, quiet lowland creeks and backwaters. There is just no way to mix fishes from such radically different habitats in a s...

40% water change to remove final three wild bleeding heart corpses. Bleeding hearts total loss. Everyone else, including Chewy, looks good. 16 total tetras gone but Chewy seems ok.

Concur on Epistylis upon further observation and research. You guys are awesome! Chewy"s pump had died last Friday (1 Sep). I had heard it running in the morning and it was dead at feeding time. I used a smaller air pump as a temporary back up. Flow was much less than normal, but seemed suffici...

Re: Swiss Tropicals corner sponge filters

I think it would work just fine. I actually am running air stones in the cavities as I have more air pressure than I know what to do with. I would not try this with super messy fish (like Panaque) however as their sawdust poop accumulates in the cavity behind the sponge. Every other water change I s...

The last group I had, several years ago, was placed in a tank that had small lengths of thin open ended bamboo. I was quite surprised when they took up hiding in them like little groups of Tatia. So I am the source. "The Tinaco was very low the day we collected. Norbert said that this was the lowest he had ever seen the river. In places, it was actually possible to jump across the river. The river had a substrate of sand and gravel with several large driftwood snags. The temperature was...

Re: Best websites to get comprehensive data on museum inventory?

Just looking at specimen records is probably more accurate than searching the literature, but yes many students and professionals look at museum collections every year and find new spp or incorrect identifications. Sometimes even among the type material! I am just saying be cautious if the location ...

Re: Best websites to get comprehensive data on museum inventory?

Eric,
Be sure to take the locality data with a grain of salt. Much of the data comes from "Fishes of..." books and papers which are often riddled with incorrect identifications. I think the most useful data to collect would be holotype location as you know that record is accurate.

Re: Surprise rubberlip in pet store

Eric, These key out as C. dorsale which is one of the most common sp from the Colombian Orinoco piedmont . This also makes sense given your contaminant C. chimu as the two spp overlap in their range. There have been several very good Chaetostoma papers published in the last few years. Probably need ...

Chewy is going through her annual shed. Picked these odontodes up from the substrate during water changes today.

Keep in mind these are as hard as teeth and could easily be used as a sewing needle.

CateLog is still down. Once up I'll do some cross checking. I am pretty sure I have photoed this fish in the past.

My working theory is C. chimu as it is collected alongside the other sp you have.

Nice. Do you have fish in there?
Currently spawning black neon tetras. It is 90% rain water and 10% tap. Hoping to transfer the fry in time to do a bleeding heart tetra spawn before fall.

This plant also works great but I forget the name. Grows nice roots in water
