Re: Mystery pleco ID

Fundulopanchax76 wrote: 05 Sep 2017, 07:30 Is it good for plecos to eat garlic ?
Garlic is often used to entice fish to feed due to it's 'aroma' - it can get a fish that hasn't eaten interested enough to feed, and 'get the ball rolling'. It's normally used in small amounts, not fed as whole cloves but mixed in with other food.

Re: A tiny interesting black catfish

Hi.
Really tough to see it against the dark gravel, is the fish yours or seen in a LFS? If in a LFS, what's it listed as? Any chance of more photos, but close up, or against a different background?
Thanks

Pterobunocephalus sp. "Peru"

Bought one today, with the intention of getting more. Was sold as Pterobunocephalus sp. 'Peru' which I'm told is neither P.depressus or P.dolichurus.
Photos are courtesy of the seller:

SL is about 60mm. As these are not in the cat-elog, I can't add it.
Thanks.

Hi Justine.
This is normally the identification section. If it's for a 'pleco', then post something in the Loricariidae section.
Thanks

I thought that too, but the fork on the tail is much deeper on the Pimelodella that Ben's fish...but yes, I can see the resemblance elsewhere. Maybe @Jools can chip in more thoughts?

Re: ID this cat fm Colombia

They've really chnaged! Darker colouring and the shape of the snout has become more rounded. Very similar to a Pimelodella though the caudal appears to not be as deeply forked. Sorry that's no real help, but thanks for sharing the photos Ben. Really interesting to see how these are changing.

Re: Species of Farlowella

I do wonder if fish number 1 is F.vittata as the rostrum looks about right, but agreed, the second fish has a much longer rostrum, similar to Farlowella amazonum or Farlowella gracilis . I don't know the identification key for these, but I do know @Shane is very knowledgeable about Farlowella, so ma...

FYI the size quoted against each fish here is the largest recorded specimen, but that's not to say they don't actually get bigger, so you may want to look at the shorter ones again.

Re: Unidentified Pleco in Tank!

This tank has been populated with loaches for about a month now. I went to get some more plant/scenery and this is how he got in. I do have another tank which is a Danio tank with Amano Shrimp that I could move him to, and make that into a tropical setup, as I am aware Danio work in Tropical or Tem...

Re: Unidentified Pleco in Tank!

Hi These are a tropical species that are quite tolerant of ph, but not sure they would do well in low temperatures - I suspect the tank will get quite cool of a night and so it can be quite big swings in temp over a 24 hour period. Ideally they would prefer a temp in the low to mid 20's (21.5-26.5°C...

Hi
Welcome to Planet!
I'd say it's almost definitely a juvenile , and as you suspect, was probably hiding in the wood/plants you purchased.

Re: Itaya River Wood catfish

Nice find. Almost definitely a Centromochlus or Tatia (but would suspect the former). As to which one, it's hard to tell from the photos, my suggestion would be Centromochlus macracanthus but it could very well be an undescribed species! The name is not helpful either, as there don't appear to be ma...

I was leaning toward something like that but without a photo showing the caudal fin and shape of the snout, it is hard to make a suggestion. If it came in with the Lasiancistrus, it could be a by-catch that got included if wild caught. Difficult if in the store, but more photos would definitely help...

That's one hell of a collection Viktor! Sorry to hear about the Murray Cod losses, especially as you were only trying to eradicate the chance of disease! Is the 'project' seeing a good footfall? How much work still to do, or is it one of those that are truly never ending?

Re: Ancistrus type

No, I don't think it's a common BN: The spots are too homogenous in size, too linear in alignment, and the spotting pattern doesn't break up towards the caudal peduncle. More photos from different angles, and also with fins flared, will be helpful. Cheers, Eric Agree with Eric, pretty sure it's not...

Is it a matter of how many times a day you feed them? Or how much food you can provide fast enough? I don't know how your banjos will compare to B. coracoideus, but I had very good success feeding the hatchlings on finely powdered blends of various dry foods - normal flakes, algae wafers, freeze-dr...

IMO it's a juvenile . I wouldn't expect to pay anywhere near that in the UK, maybe £10-15 GBP.

@bekateen - good spot! If you look closely at the photos in the original post (especially the last one), the outer edge of the caudal fin is clear - does this show re-growth following damage? I take it you mean Calophysus macropterus ? To be fair, I'm not sure how often these come up so small (I take it your fish is around 4"?), but do agree, colouring it is nothing like the adult fish. A possibility based on the shape of the adipose fin is Pinirampus pirinampu . Another possibility...
