Re: Scariest freshwater animals - what's this giant catfish?

not even a sturgeon has those puppy dog eyes especially not on the top of the head. no, these guys have the "shark fetish", which is quite common on the mockumentary channels. if it's not "sharky" it's not mediapathic I'd say they took a model of a baby Dogfish, upscaled it and a...

Re: building a "big" Potamotrygon/SA Catfishes tank

yes, but with P ornatus you had to add at least 4-5 fish; because of the larger Pimelodus species, this one is by far the most social

Aguarunichthys is fiercely territorial and does fine on its' own

Re: Scariest freshwater animals - what's this giant catfish?

it's a fake it's in the text, but you have to find it; it says "divers are working with a model of a catfish it's obviously made by some idiots that have no clue what a true catfish looks like what they did is take a shark-like thing, add Perciform lips like a grouper has and add whiskers they ...

Re: building a "big" Potamotrygon/SA Catfishes tank

I think a predator that will fit in there perfectly would be Aguarunichthys.

with an adult length of 35 cm or so and a slender built it will not eat any of your fish, but it still has all the great looks and attitude of the tankbuster Pimelodids.

Re: Asian red tail catfish

if you like the overall shape of that fish, I'd say trade it and get yourself a nice Leiarius you have all the pro's: the sleek predatory look, the size (3 feet give or take), the predatory nature; but not the agression Leiarius leaves other fish in peace if the other fish are as big as half its' ow...

Re: building a "big" Potamotrygon/SA Catfishes tank

I've been able to resist the temptation and I didn't get the 1 foot Pseudoplatystoma fasciatum, neither the 10 inches Phractocephallus which I saw this afternoon... Even if they were splendid and thriving... keep resisting that urge! there are 2 reasons why that would have been really bad for your ...

Re: Akysis vespa and temperature

Akysis can handle higher temperatures, they'll eat and grow the drawback is that it at least halves their life expectancy.....which i found out myself, shame on me because of this, Akysis and otocinclus don't make the best tankmates. there is a 'cold water Otocinclus" in the hobby, it has the s...

Re: Asian red tail catfish

(don't worry I have a pond ready for him when he gets bigger cause the pond is filled with many adult Arowana)
if you want to keep the Asian Red Tail, you probably have to ditch the Arowana's.....this catfish has a reputation of attacking and destroying tankmates, even bigger than itself

and how big IS it really....

well, I am 6 foot and a bit when dressed and wearing my cowboy boots (184cm)

check the door behind me, that's a standard doorway; 200cm height

and I'm tiny next to the tank!

simple; I was referring to -for example- Ochmacanthus; a scale- and slime-eating parasite that looks like Homaloptera. this catfish does turn up in the trade now and then because of its' nice coloration Ochmacanthus orinoco this is another sad example that turned up in the trade quite recently...it ...

A very nice fish, but no match for the T. strigata!
depends on taste; IMO Trachelyichthys exilis is far more beautiful than any Tatia.....:)

it's not a fragile fish.....

BUT it can and does die when the water turns bad and the oxygensupply runs out.

how did they package the fish?

I hope they didn't cram 6 halfgrown Ituglanis in a single bag......

they are completely harmless with tetra's, Ancistrus etc with Trichomycterids it's fairly simple; the ones that look like loaches are not just harmless but very nice fish to keep; the parasitic ones are very nasty the best way to separate them is; if a Trichomycterid has visible whiskers: it's a har...
