I fit into the retail end. It allows me to experience many species I otherwise would not be able to afford or spend any time with, but the financial rewards are far less than what my degrees would earn me. If you had asked me all through high school and college this is what I wanted to do, though. B...

Ouch. Formalin can be extremely harsh, especially to debilitated/weak fish. I don't think I'd try it on these. Perhaps extreme heat with serious supplemental oxygenation and salt? L239, in my experience, seems to be hit with this parasite or bacterial infection really badly. I've never had any succe...

The US v. Scotland friendly (last year, I think?) showed at least a few of the names that come out when mother country calls - Fletcher, Ferguson, that big guy from Everton ... There does seem to be a lack of young Scots in the EPL. And the SPL, it seems to have turned into an MLS with a Rangers &am...

The way the Australia-Italy match went down probably represents part of the problem in the US with soccer. In a country where our domestic sports leagues value fair-play and attempt to minimize officiating error, the Italian dive kind of ruins what was a great game. Tim Cahill's quotes after the gam...

I thought the linesmen were at fault at times, but the ref did OK in a very hard game to referee. So, I don't think he was that bad at all. What did he do wrong? Jools My stance on refs: allow the game to develop naturally as 11 v. 11, interfering with yellow cards for "cynical" fouls and...

I think Eric Wynalda said it best about officials- there are only 2 types: bad and worse. The Uruguayan ref showed no consistency, backbone, or restraint. What was showing to be a beautiful counter-attacking match got hacked into an ugly, exhausting contest. As a US fan, I'm partial. But that ref ru...

Excellent canister (for Hagen). Powerful and spacious, but lacking some of the finer features of Eheim ... if you've got upwards of $350 to blow on a single filter (always have a redundancy/backup) it is in a class by itself.

Megalancistrus skin problem

I've a Megalancistrus sp. about 12 inches TL with a persistent skin problem. When he arrived via air cargo, the bag he was packed in was filled with sloughed off skin. His head region was pitted with 1/2 inch long wounds. After a few days (and with some Melafix) the patches turned bluish, as if new ...

They tend to grow slower once they reach about 6-7", IME. Small ones, however, if fed several meals a day and given large water changes, should grow several inches a year. If you just leave them wood to gnaw on and feed less, they tend to grow less. I've found they will generally eat and eat an...

Quite a bit late with this, but I know of an acquaintance who put a 13" royal plec in with his 18" Jardini. The Jardini took his time - and waited all of 8 days to kill the royal. With Osteoglossum plecs do quite well. With Scleropages, though, it's a different matter.

Whilst deworming will certainly have its supporters - for the most part I would skip it. It's not that easy to dose properly or efficiently for small plecos and delivery methods are either problematic (needles!) or haphazard (adding to food/water). If you have the QT, that should be sufficient. Garl...
