Re: Which Auchenipterids are being kept by PC members?
After having been with me for nearly 13 years, I found my poor Ageneiosus sp(3) dead this afternoon. Since the death of the other two specimens in 2011, this fish has litterally struggled to survive and more than once I thought it would die. It didn't. The last few weeks it was barely able to swim a...

Re: The South-American Knifefishes thread
Yesterday evening I saw all 3(!) Mousetails at the same time. Quite incredible. I had to look (and count) several times to believe it. And when I looked more closely, I noticed deep red gills and regular rubbing the gill area as if they had white spot. Gyrodactylus or Dactylogyrus aka gill worms. T...

Re: Which Auchenipterids are being kept by PC members?
Based on colouration of the anal fin (these fish are still too small to show any gender ID), I'd say that the A. punctatus are 1 male and 3 females. One has a completely black anal fin; the others only have a black stripe at the bottom of the fin with a more or less hyaline part near the body. Still...

Whatever their correct scientific species name, these are absolutely great Tatias. Marvelous spots - mind the difference in size! -, remarkable tail pattern. Congrats!Atmichaels wrote:I received 6 of the cf. galaxias from Ted. Below is a pic of them followed by a short video taken shortly after their arrival.

Re: A day in the life of Planet
In preparation for a new CotM article, I am reviewing the Pimelodid genus Hypophthalmus . It turns out most of the pictures in the catelog are incorrect and I am moving them around and adding information to correctly identify them. Although a lumper, I still don't understand why the family Hypoptha...

I currently keep 2 Elephant nose (Sternarchorhynchus oxyrhynchus) and 2 Mousetail knife fishes (Gymnorhamphichthys rondoni). Here's a link to a short video made by the owner of the aquatic shop I bought them from: http://youtu.be/bRC4ork77tg These four have settled in without any problems. Bellies full, tears in the caudal fins healed and very visible atm. Must be because they are still young, so I won't get used to it. ...

Re: The South-American Knifefishes thread
The quality of that Tubifex was so incredibly poor that I had to throw everything away. The fact that I can't feed the proper food means the almost certain death of one of the Mousetails..... I'll try small frozen foods tonight, but my hopes aren't high. Maybe the poor thing is beyond recovery anyw...

Damn, the quality of that Tubifex was so incredibly poor that I had to throw everything away. I had previously bought good quality from this person and he can deliver large amounts (half a kilo in my case). Re: Which Auchenipterids are being kept by PC members?
Is this a woodcat species tank or a woodcat "mix" tank? They are the only two species in the tank which is among my smallest at 24"x15"x12". In that case you may have proven that a species is able to "recognize" its offspring and therefore not eat it. I for one wo...

Re: Which Auchenipterids are being kept by PC members?
These are 6cm - 8cm SL woodcats we're talking about here and 2cm guppies, both fishes feed together in the light during the day. Furthermore they were not fed for two weeks while I was in the US and there is still 3mm fry in there. I just found that surprising. I agree with that being surprising. I...

Re: Which Auchenipterids are being kept by PC members?
I meant the bottom fish as it does not match what we have in the cat-elog under the same species name. Shane, I'm sorry but I'm not going to burn my hands again on this matter. The whole Tatia/Centromochlus determination thing is becoming very murky, not in the least because scientific papers (and ...

Re: Which Auchenipterids are being kept by PC members?
I also note the tank containing Centromochlus schultzi has a thriving population of Poecilia with young in the tank. My first thought was, that's interesting, the woodcats eat cherry shrimp but don't touch the fry. My second thought, much later, was I wonder if that's something to do with the woodc...

Re: A few from Iquitos to ID
Tatia intermedia should have dark cross-bars and lack white spots on the caudal fin also, as can be seen the individual here. Small individuals, and individuals from blackwater habitats tend to have brighter spots on a darker body. Fish C looks quite small, compared to the size of the gravel. All t...

Re: A few from Iquitos to ID
Fish C looks like Tatia intermedia to me. Spots are ellipsoid in that species (vs. circular in Tatia galaxias ). Sorry Rupert, have to disagree with you on this one. I know the Tatia intermedia complex is very complex, yet I have never seen an intermedia patterned as bright and beautiful as this on...

Re: A few from Iquitos to ID
Marc... with all due respect... I am fully aware that fish cannot read, and that most of us are 'arm chair ichthyologists' having some fun with fish that we get sporadic access to. Range data on many fish in the world is woefully incomplete. I have personally collected fish species a long way out o...

Re: Which Auchenipterids are being kept by PC members?
Nope, except that it indeed looks like an Auchenipterus species. I can't tell you anything about this fish on species level as this genus is too unclear for me. I can ID an A. nigripinnis, based on the fact that I've kept those myself, but that's about it. Btw: the Tatia (lower picture) is said to b...

Thanks Richard, I'm very happy with them. Will try to make some decent pictures, but I have to learn to work with the android. Re: A few from Iquitos to ID
Doubtful that D is T. gyrina... these fish came from Peru, and the PlanetCatfish profile described distribution as being Suriname....? T. galaxias also appears to come from much further north and east. In that case the PC description is incomplete (see link below). Anyway, it amazes me that people ...

About to leave for Amersfoort to pick up the four Auchenipterichthys punctatus . The last time these were offered was in 2009 (OutsideInside Aquatics in Scotland). I stayed at Jools' for a week at that time, so no problems picking them up. They turned out to be A. coracoideus (Zamoras), so I did not...

Woodcats:
A: or a yet undescribed Spinipterus
B: a member of the Tatia intermedia complex
C: I'd say but it could also be
D:
Second thoughts wrt C, given the large spots, I think it is Tatia galaxias.
