I've never had a big catfish lose an eye.
But I believe yours will do very well as long as there are no aggressive large fish in with them. Especially large cichlids when the redtail is still young.

To actually give you a growth rate it would be very important to know which species you have, what you are feeding them and what their tank mates and conditions are.

Re: What species of Mystus is this?
I have a H.wyckii in the same tank and have never had a problem with aggression with either. The tank size is the secret. Either of these fish in small tanks (under 200 gallons) would be really bad dudes. A lot of people in the hobby visiting have been surprised how peaceful some of the nasty's are ...

Wow yours has grown a lot faster than mine.
I noticed you've had the fish for only 7 months. It took me about a year and a half to get mine from 4" to 12".
How big was yours when you bought it?

Hi Kenneth, Your fish get bigger than everyone else because you : 1. Live in Texas 2. You measure in American inches 3. You feed them zebra plecos I checked your catfish log and there you have only kept the fish for 2 years. LOL Sorry American years. Great to know you are well and moving soon to Can...

Re: Brachyplatystoma tigrinum
People keeping large catfish seldom keep them in living rooms unless the fish are juveniles. Most people keep their large tanks (myself) or indoor ponds in their basements or lacking basements in fish rooms (Like Tom Herman African rift lake cichlids did) or fish houses (Rusty Wessel ). Others in su...

Re: Lophiosilurus alexandri
I've kept them for many years. I feed primarily cut up fish including smelt, mackerel, herring, pink salmon, whitefish, shrimp. I also keep a large population of guppies in the tank.
Since they do get quite large you will eventually need a large tank for them. My largest got to 26"tl in 7 years.

Your tank and fish look fantastic. I've got a large female lima that also eats large sinking pellets (6mm to 9mm) smelt, mackeral, white fish, herring and pink salmon in addition to some of the foods Richard and others have suggested. She is a large fish and probably an inch or 2 bigger than suggest...

I agree with Richard...right on.
The only drawback is as they get large they lose their attractive juvenile pattern.

Re: Brachyplatystoma tigrinum
They do like a lot of swimming space and I concur with those who said it needs a large tank, but does anyone here think they actually get 3 feet long? Both this site, Ronaldo Barthem & Michael Goulding give a maximum size of 50cm (under 20"). I've kept them for 18 years and that is also my ...

Well it appears both of you are convinced that it is H.nemerus.
Why do you think that it is so small compared to the size it should have grown to?

Re: What species of Mystus is this?
Thanks for the 3 suggestions. Richard, If it is the asian redtail catfish you are thinking of as Hemibagrus nemurus (which was known as Mystus nemurus) and is now known as Hemibagrus wyckioides, I have that fish and it is not the same species. My H. wyckioides grew over 20 inches in the same time I'...

Re: Pterodoras granulosus????
P. Granulosus really are great fish. My experience on owning them for 20 plus years is a bit different from some of the others. I owned my first from 1985 to 2004. He never got to the size of 36" tl. He only reached about 27" and preferred to ambush cichlids swimming past his cave rather t...

Re: Do you know what doriad this is?
Thanks for the suggestions. Do you believe it could be a Doras Higuchi? An informal poll of friends seeing it over the past month have suggested that might be where belongs. I realize that the fish was only identified in 2008. I bought my fish from Shark Aquarium (New Jersey) in 2001. The proprietor...

I bought this fish 8 years ago from Shark Aquarium and they did not know the species. Many dozens of fish people have seen it when visiting me and nobody has been able to identify it. It is approx 10 1/2" total length.

That is my 15k its 28' by 18' L shaped and 6' deep. The other one is in my 52k its 36' by 27 feet and L shaped also and 9 feet deep. That Wyckii uses caves and that is why it is difficult to know if he is still in the tank. He eats cichlids and the tank has many hundreds of adult cichlids. So he doe...

I had one for 17 years (1990 to 2007) with a chance it is still alive in my big tank, 2007 was the last time I saw it. I have one in my second biggest tank that I bought in 1999 that is still alive ( I only see it at feeding time). It resides in a large clump of bogwood at other times about 10 feet ...

Re: Discussion about Hemibagrus wyckii's compatibility
Hello, I've had 4 wyckii's and believe I still might have 3. The first one (male) could never be kept with any other fish. He grew big very fast and lived out his life in a 180 by himself. The 2nd was bought at the same time and a lot slower growing and not as nasty. I could keep Plecos in with it a...
