Fry

Found a few fry in a tank I've only had characins in for the past few weeks. (Since the CSG convention weekend as it happens). No obvious candidates but maybe Hara jerdoni? Re: At what size are Scleromystax barbatus saleable?

I've raised and sold a fair few corys including this species and I'd say they were big enough to trade and to sell at auctions etc. I'm not sure I'd be comfortable selling them to a shop at that size though. This is a fast growing species and is worth more when larger so would be worth growing on fo...

Re: Visits to LFS before or during convention

Bumped into a few folk in both Pier and Aqualife so plenty fish were being bought.
I bought Hara jerdoni, Corydoras hastatus and Trochilocharax ornatus.

Most interest concerned an unknown "deep water" catfish that nobody could identify even to genus (or maybe even family).

Re: Are YOU a lumper or a splitter

Indeed, and the worst (best?) one isn't even a Cory. Synodontis galinae anyone? I think the more I know about something, the more likely I am to think split. Also, fish breeders IMHO are much more likely splitters. Jools Well breeders are collectors so they/we like to "collect" different ...

Re: PLEASE help me identify this small Cory-like striped cat

C123 has the yellow fins (it's called yellow cory cat) but it should have horizontal bars in the dorsal fin (though these are not always obvious) rather than a blotch. It's also uncommon in the hobby.

There's always the possibility you have something new.

Re: PLEASE help me identify this small Cory-like striped cat

I have C. bilineatus and they are quite different from this fish. The pattern is much bolder. Also they are rare in the hobby. This fish is most like C. napoensis, which is very variable or perhaps C132.

Your fish look like the line-bred black corys. Your friends are dark shultzei/aeneus. I know somebody who bought some of those and they lightened up considerably when kept over a light substrate. Just as Ian said.

Gold catfish

Jerry Coyne, author of Why Evolution is True has posted a picture of some pre-hispanic Colombian gold objects on his blog. One is described as a catfish and can be seen here . Can it be identified at all even to family? I wondered about a very stylised callichthyd. Perhaps Hoplosternum magdalenae ?
