Pictures of the new plecos, sold as ancistrus sp. red/black

Good morning everyone. I got my "piebald ancistrus" yesterday. They were sold as ancistrus sp. red/black, and are quite cute, at just under 2 inches. I took some pictures for help in making sure that's exactly what they are. I was reading the information here http://www.planetcatfish.com/i...

I use sand in most of my tanks. The very best sand I've found so far, is available from our local sand and gravel yard, called airport grade, for 5 dollars, for 2 5 gallon buckets full. This has been enough sand to do a 38 gallon, 2 75 gallons, a 55 gallon, 2 29 gallons, and still have 2/3's of one...

I've never had a "cycled" tank that had zero nitrates. They are the end product of living fish and food, and even the best water change regime is still going to leave some trace of them. How long has this tank been up? What is your regular water change schedule?

All of mine are well over 3.5 inches, and 2 of the males are closer to 5 tl, so I'll definitely be working on sexing and separating fish this weekend. Have you had better luck spawning them as a colony? Or paired into individual tanks? My albino bristlenose seem to spawn like mad no matter how I kee...

hehe Janne, I was thinking the same thing! I have 8 of them in a tank with rockwork, caves, and driftwood. I put them in there to quarantine, and 3 months later, they're still there. I haven't seen any fry, and I was considering moving a pair into a smaller tank by themselves. I haven't attempted to...

You'd just end up with twice as many tanks, not more time for the wife :D

I always get such a charge out of hearing the husbands complain about their wives lack of interest and jealousy about the time spent "playing with the fishes". I've had exactly the opposite experience :)

For every good, responsible hobbyist, there are 3 of the people that replace their fish on a monthly basis as they die, until they get sick of all the problems and sell their "failure" tank in the paper. I actually had a customer scold me when I told her we'd be ordering NO more of those p...

12 inches is a bit conservative for the potential size that royal plecos can attain. I saw a recently imported one that was easily 18 inches from head to tail, and was about 8 inches across his head. He was beautiful. He was at a store called Jumbo Fish, in Wichita, Kansas, 3 or 4 years ago. Then ag...

Has anyone kept the LDA03 golden black ancistrus?

According to the pictures in the aqualog, they are quite black with large, creamy white spots, and they stay under 4 inches. I've currently got 4 types of ancistrus, and intend to add 2 or 3 more, in hopes of spawning them. If anyone has experience with these guys, I'd be really grateful to hear abo...

All plecos have the ability to jump. I've rarely had one hit the floor unless it was in a new tank and wasn't familiar with its surroundings though.
