Re: Doradidae from Kabalebo river

Hi Martin, additionally there is Doras carinatus (and Acanthodoras cataphractus, Amblydoras affinis, Platydoras costatus, Pterodoras aff. granulosus ) listed for Corantijne river which I also rather excluded. My first thought was also "looks a bit like Tenellus ", but I know close to nothi...

Doradidae from Kabalebo river

Hi, from Kabalebo river in Suriname: http://www.l-welse.com/gallery/files/3/9/9/8/doras_sp_ks_10091_600.jpg If I remember correctly it was rather small (~6 cm), I guess a juvenile ?! This one does not seem to fit to any of the doradids listed for Corantijne river system in Suriname or is it just due...

Re: Whiptail from French Guyana

Hi, meanwhile I received one picture of the original group from Ernst-Otto von Drachenfels which he published among others as L 42 in the DATZ. The picture is quite old and the quality is not perfect but with this H./R. platyura can be ruled out without any doubt. He also confirmed that L 42 is cert...

Re: Id help

Hi,

I still tend more towards P. leopardus but L 114 (P. cf. leopardus) is certainly also an option.
Usually pictures in the water are better to judge colour and pattern.

Re: Some catfish from Suriname...

Hi, IMHO the first one is certainly no P. cristata as the black band crosses the eye and is too broad. This might be Pimelodella procera , the picture in the book of Mol is a perfect fit to my eye. The dorsal fin should have a black blotch at the tip/border which might the part missing in your fish....

Re: Spatuloricaria caquetae - holding eggs

Hi,

I don't think so, the males of Spatuloricaria spp. have very long spines at the cheeks that should be visible in the pics.
This might be a Loricaria species, in a close pic of the mouth would help.

Re: C. schwartzi or something else?

Hello Marlonneke, difficult question. Beside the black stripe in the dorsal fin I don't see any relevant difference. C. schwartzi seems to be quite variable but as you basically never get any detailed information about the exact catching location of corys that are imported in such huge quantities it...

Re: C. schwartzi or something else?

Hi, You may be right that your unique specimen is Corydoras surinamensis . Surinamensis has the dark band on the first dorsal rays like your fish. this is for sure no C. surinamensis . As far as I know there has never been any commercial export of C. surinamensis , it's endemic to upper Coppename ri...

Re: Whiptail from French Guyana

Hi Jools, well, as already stated the problem is that going by the DATZ picture this could be nearly any whiptail (besides H. platyura ). Just going by the location (my whiptails are from the same drainage as L 42) is not convincing for me. I prefer not to speculate... L 42 is for me a "defined...

Re: Whiptail from French Guyana

Hello both, thanks for your replies. Hemiloricaria platyura seems to be the only species in the Cat-elog from French Guyana, specifically the Mana river system. then this seems to be incomplete, LeBail et al. (2000) mention two species for FG, besides this one also H./R. stewarti . In the checklist ...

Hi, what makes you so (100%) sure ? Don't get me wrong, I'm also quite convinced that they are C. trilineatus , as they look very typical and probability is also much higher. C. julii are rather rare in the trade. However, the most commonly spread characters for ID'ing are not safe. Is the origin of...

Hi, from above they look all rather like members of aeneus group in my eyes. Several of the above mentioned criteria are just my personal ones based on my personal observation and there is certainly no proof that this must apply to all species of these lineages. For instance the pectoral spine is no...

Hi, the picture is not ideal for ID'ing and there are lots of options with similar pattern. Do you have any idea of their origin ? What was the name on the stock list ? After going through the Cat-elog a few times I can confidently say theres a 28% chance they might be one of these... Corydoras sp(c...

Hi, You are absolutely right. Real L144 probably never existed since only a single male was ever imported. well, it was only imported one yellow (xanthoristic) male, this is afaik correct. But there were more normally coloured ones imported in the same batch and with these this yellow trait was cros...

Hi, I was hoping that Ian will say some words about this, I think he kept CW019 already... The upper one looks more like a member of aeneus group, the snout is rounder and the eye position seems to be above the line of the junction of the body scutes: https://www.planetcatfish.com/forum/download/fil...

Re: Could it be CW019 ?

Hello Francois, this "eyebrow" would be indeed more typical for elegans group than for aeneus group. It's certainly also an option that you have two mimetic species from both the groups. Best for ID'ing is a exactly lateral picture with natural snout position (not squeezed at the glass,......

Re: Could it be CW019 ?

Hello Francois, I can understand your confusion, it's sometimes difficult to differentiate on pictures these two species groups. There are small differences with respect to eye position (rather low in elegans group) and snout morphology (pointing more towards the front instead of down), these small ...
