Re: Unscrupulous aquabid seller
I'm sure more people didn't complain about the ALL CAPS because they didn't want to contribute to dragging this thread OT. I read Marc's first reply to this thread, smiled, and agreed with him. Vinman, I have a suggestion, instead of admitting to being lazy and being adversarial with one of the regu...

Re: Unscrupulous aquabid seller
I don't see auction # 1349864572 listed on aquabid anymore. Perhaps either the seller or aquabid removed it?

Re: Catfish in Chengdu, China
Two places I've requested we visit:
1. A fish market
2. A good LFS
I'm not sure we'll make it to either this time around. Our schedule is constantly squeezed by the protracted meals they like to have here.

Re: Catfish in Chengdu, China
Viktor, the reddish fish are "parrot cichlids"--artificially manufactured fish. As such, they cannot produce offspring. When I used to professionally do aquarium maintenence, they were a big hit with my Asian clientelle (along with "flowerhorn cichlids"). Personally, I don't get ...

Re: Catfish in Chengdu, China
Thanks, Silurus. I think this place might be both a restaurant and LFS. I'm not sure all the fish were for eating, but then again, my western palate views food sources differently than the Chengdu-nese as evidenced by what my inlaws put in their hot-pot for dinner (at a different, upscale restaurant...

Cichlasoma urophthalmus sure is a pretty fish.
My uncle, who lives near Pompano Beach, has caught both Cichlasoma urophthalmus and Cichlasoma festae in the lakes near him. They also have plenty of Cichla ocellaris.

I'm on vacation with my family in Chengdu, China... hometown of my inlaws. I've been keeping an eye out for fish and aquariums. Welcome, Frank. I'm quite familiar with the Brooklyn Aquarium, although it's been several years since my last visit. Do they still have the Scleropages formosus ? My friends had donated, among other things, a sea turtle to the Brooklyn Aquarium ~12 years ago. I assume it is still alive and doing well.

Awesome thread! I'm quite jealous of the OP. Swimming with the arowanas in SA is on my bucket list. I know arowanas aren't found in the Rio Xingu (or, not that I'm aware of), however, diving with all those cool L-numbers looks pretty great! Thanks for sharing.

Re: plec's do they chew and eat silicone tank sealer
In my 32 years of keeping fish, I've never heard anything about plecos (or any other fish, for that matter) eating silicone sealant. It's like putting a vat of margarine in your backyard and waiting for the raccoons to come eat it... it just doesn't happen. Most animals seem to have that innate inte...

Re: S.angelica not settling in
As Richard B notes, I wouldn't be too worried. It may take a bit more time for your S. angelica to get used to its new environment--especially since it had been kept in one tank (I'm assuming they didn't move it around much, if at all, at your LFS) for a long time before you acquired it. It should s...

Re: Colombian Shark catfish woes
What is the footprint of your 200 gal tank? If it is 6' x 2', and you don't have any other very active fish in the tank, it should be sufficient for your shark cat. As you may know by now, these catfish live in a marine environment when they are adults. I would highly recommend you consider making t...

I've been doing quite a bit of fishing in the Musconetcong River in NJ. There are a ton of trout, but they're not biting--it's been a hot, dry summer and they've kept to the bottom. I've caught a bunch of smallmouth bass ( Micropterus dolomieu ) there--need to take some pics tomorrow, if the weather...

Last night, I caught the biggest bass I've hooked this summer. I had to tighten the drag on my reel just to get the fish in--another first for this summer. It had already gotten dark and it was hard to get a good picture of it next to my water bottle (for reference). The water bottle, including the ...

I was also thinking about getting a tattoo with a dorsal view of a royal and a blue eyed panaque laying side-by-side, head-to-tail. The blue eyes would really pop if done well. I second the recommendation of trying to find a tattoo artist who specializes in portraits. Also, if you flip through artis...

Hey, now. Don't be lumping all mouthbrooders into one group. As you may know, the fish in my avatar (my favorite fish) is a mouth brooder. I would never confuse it with a mbuna, and I know you wouldn't too.
