The water report says that your tapwater varies from 7.1 to 7.7, with the mean average being 7.3. So, not as alkaline as you thought! :D Looks like I'm going to get digital PH meter then  EDIT ........ Is this PH pen any good or it just a waste of money ? ...... http://www.mminstruments.c...

I have a sub tropical tank with 4 x 3-4in sub-adult Channa ornatipinnis which have an adult size of 8in. PH . . Important or not ?
How important is the PH to an aquariums inhabitants ? It seems that in a very general way, most catfishes live in water that generally ranges from soft to slightly hard (excluding syno's). The reason that I'm trying to muddle through asking such a seemly random question is that my PH from the tap is...

And they are not mellow, when with fry
I wouldnt exactly call them mega aggressive either, not compared with something like convicts.
Pair with fry, female always darkens when she has free swmming fry

How about herotilapia multispinosa AKA rainbow cichlid ? They stay reasonably small at around 3-4 inches, breed as easy as convicts and have hundreds of babies (lots of live food for the pictus  ) and look OK. My pair lay eggs every 4-5 weeks have on average 3-400 young but as they are out...

There is also the problem of its eventual size to consider.
