As long as there is ample "swimming" or should I say "hopping" room for the Farlowellas and enough food, they should do okay. I have Farlowellas in with Corydoras trilineatus and the Farlowellas breed regularly.

I would think nail polish remover would be more of a problem: acetone. It dries very quickly, but to make sure, wash your hands with plain water before sticking your hand in the tank.

It also depends how your water is out of the tap. If it's really a disaster out of the tap, you may not need to add anything.
