I really don't think that the high pH will be a problem if you are going planted. I believe that if you add CO2, it will lower the pH (not sure how much though). I have a planted tank and my pH is about 7.8. The biggest question I have is about lighting. You don't say what kind of lamps are being us...

would have been nice if they had spent a bit longer on the species commonly found in aquariums rather than the brief 10 seconds with the angel fish near the end still it was worth watching and recording :D I agree completely. I finally managed to watch it last night, and was dissapointed. I think t...

Here is a pic of the heater guard: http://www.bigalsonline.com/catalog/product.xml?product_id=19269;category_id=2913 It works well. I don't mind switching heaters, its just that I need 5 or 6 of them. If I buy the tronics with the heater guards, I would like to be able to reuse the heater guards in ...

Heater Question
I am in need of a new heater. In the past, I have been going with the Tronic heaters, that have an optional plastic "shell" that keeps the fish from hiding next to the heater (especially plecos). I am finding it nearly impossible to find the 100 Watt version of this heater, and I am beginn...

Clay temperature change will probably not be enough for Hypancistrus, at least IME. You can always collect rainwater, if you can't afford RO or filtered water. I got my first few spawns that way. Barbie Getting RO water is not a problem. How long do you keep the temperature down, and how many degre...

Thanks for the link, that goes into a lot of detail, I'm hoping that I will not have to do that much simulation work. I will be dealing with Hypacistrus (King Tigers, L066), and I am hoping that the temperature change will be enough. That link said that Panaque nigrolineatus has been bred in captivi...

Rainy Season Simulation
Hello, How do some of you simulate a rainy season? I know that you have to do water changes with cooler water, but how much cooler? Do you also lower the temperature on your heater, or do you allow it to warm up the newly changed water? How often do you change the water with the cool water? Any expe...

L066 King Tiger: Soft Water Necessary For Spawning?
Hello all, I got a bug in me to attempt breed some exotics. The LFS has a bunch of L066 in stock and I am thinking of getting 5 or 6. I have looked at the pictures in the Catelog, and the sexes seem pretty easy to tell apart when they are mature (unfortunately, these are juvies). Once they are matur...

Any floor with so few joists would have to reenforced before aquariums are set up, but get a second quote as I would never charge $150 dollars a joist and this is what I do for a living. How far apart do you recomend? What is the going rate for a joist? Also, this is not very high level, it is abou...

I've never heard of putting top soil in an aquarium. I assume that this is for a planted aquarium. IME with pond plants, the top soil is too light weight and floats too easily. Did you think about trying clay? However for an aquarium, I just go with flourite mixed with gravel (too expensive for me d...

Sorry to hijack the post, but its related. What size cave do people use to spawn these fish. I've done it in the past, and had very low production of viable eggs. Most just got fungus. I thought that maybe they were not getting fertilized. After 2 spawnings, only 1 fry survived. After about a year, ...
