Re: Almost had a tank of cooked zebras
Linus was on the right path but I would suggest a few tweaks. A separate temperature controller and a high quality heater is the best way. I don't know what it is about our hobby / passion that we buy expensive show pieces and then try and go cheap on their support. It took me a long time to break t...

Re: From NORTE ENERGIA SA: Cultivo de acari zebra-
Some of the word choices were interesting. The fact that the hydro company published the report makes it even more self serving. My take is they are still down playing the ecological impact of the dam. To me they are saying that it is not hard to breed them in captivity so no real harm. In fact if s...

Re: If you saw me in a store what would you call me?
Didn't mean to stretch this out for an extra day but my boys are home from college and the family had an fun night playing UNO. Open ended questions always give interesting answers. Even the comment from Bas Pels didn't harsh my mellow! It was only in the small tank for 10 minutes and back to the re...

If you saw me in a store what would you call me?
Just trying have a bit of light-hearted fun with this post. If you saw this in a store tank without a description what would you think it is? TL is 3.5" It is okay to be a bit biased since everyone knows my area of focus. It is not a L number cross and I currently keep 9 different Pseudacanthic...

Bump. Not sure if the odds have actually turned in my favor but after all this time I got two about 1 month apart.

Jools, nice add to the attachment section. I grabbed these directly from the camera roll on my iPad. Is there any way to scale the photos?Jim

Re: sexing l25 35cm
Sorry to keep giving the standard response, 'feed well for 1-2 months and then look from above.' L25s and L24s are very hard to sex when thin. I was amazed how much the shape of the head changed as they filled out. The female that spawned for me was more grizzled than the one in the photo.

Re: L25 spawn at last! Update
Thank you all for the words of encouragement. This update is overdue but my 'other' project has demanded my time. After a month I lost the last fry. I always dread taking out eggs before they have tails! To help others I will tell you how a quick impulsive idea 2 years ago has been efficiently and q...

Re: Is there a digital TDS meter you would recommend?
I know that many feel that Milwaukee makes 'inexpensive' test equipment but I have found them adequate. My conductivity meter (similar to a TDS meter but not the same) does not drift as long as I keep the probe clean. I recalibrate 2x a year and it is within 1%. There are many posts on using TDS met...

I was reading the thread and realized I missed one detail. I knew they spawned. While collecting the fry some always get lost in the tank. This is the first one to survive. That is why I was surprised.

I'm a bit embarrassed to tell this story but I had a similar surprise at the same time. Even as an 'expert' you can never stop learning and finding things to make one smile. I was cleaning the gravel in my L600 breeding tank as usual and saw a small flash of something as I moved some driftwood. Afte...

Re: My L 600 , Pseudacanthicus Leopardus
Boa Tarde, Very interesting group. I have been looking at your photos for some time and comparing reference photos I keep. Do you know the rivers where they were collected? So far P. Leopardus all have dark eyes and even with a flash are not white. The first two photos look to be non-typical L25s. I...

Re: l114
Best estimate is it takes about 4-5 years. I posted a growth chart in another post in February. The title was L600 growth rate. I do not know the quick way to add a link. The chart should apply for all p. leopardus.

Re: L25 spawn at last!
Thanks everyone for sharing my excitement. There are still a lot of days to go before counting this as a success. My concern level has risen because I felt it was necessary to take the spawn from the male and the cave earlier than my 1 week standard. I kept noticing a few empty egg cases outside the...

L25 spawn at last!
After being so close for the past few months all of the pieces finally fell into place. L25s are a level unto their own compared to all the other fish I have spawned (Cardinal Tetras, Discus, other pseudas, and more). I acquired an adult pair almost two years ago (Already?) and then another smaller ...

A little quick with the copy and paste as 'the devil is in the details.' :-! Since this forum tends to be more detail oriented I have copied from Wikipedia note 3 under taxonomic which is most accurate for this situation. The third type of hybrid consists of crosses between populations, breeds or cu...

I use massivore as the primary food for large Pseudas. It is effective and seems to keep the waste down.
Perhaps an update to this thread in 4-5 months?

Barbie is on the right path. For that length they are under weight. My wife and I think the first is a female and the second might be as well. She is right more than I am these days. The cat-elog has a photo of one of our pairs for comparison. The female is obviously gravid but you can see distinct ...

Re: Water changes
Quick note regarding UV. I have used it for 8 years. Like everything there are pros and cons. It keeps algae under control, keeps the water clear, and slows any outbreak. The downside is it can hide an outbreak, they need a pump, cost money to use, and the bulb replacement is expensive. For my fluva...

Re: Water changes
I have several mini systems which are 3-4 tanks with a common sump. This increases filter capacity, reduces chance to spread disease, and makes it easier on my wife when I travel. All of my smaller tanks have sponge filters as well.

Re: Water changes
You have chosen some real challenges. They are a PITA to breed for a reason. If you are serious about being successful then don't take the easy way and plan for both systems now while you have the access and time. I personally have over 2500 gallons of tanks devoted to Pseudacanthicus and retrofitti...

Re: DVDs to digital
Depending on what software your brother used you might be able to read the chapters directly. I can put in a 'home movie' DVDs into my computer and the video edit software finds the files without having to 'rip' or translate it. Just a suggestion to save time. I'm getting faster uploading to YouTube...

Re: Panaque collection mysteriously dying off
Getting to the root of the problem requires careful attention to detail. I have spent a year understanding my problem with Pseuda fry deaths. What delayed the process was making too many assumptions. One example was assuming that a manufacturer never changed their formula. It was not until I actuall...

Re: Video of P. leopardus Spawn
Everyone has the right ideas. I did put the spawn back in the cave but I have never seen a Pseuda then take over. I grabbed the eggs when the snails started after them. Pseudas are very particular about their caves. When they were smaller they had no problem spawning in the cave. Now that they are b...

Video of P. leopardus Spawn
This video was recorded over the summer. This is my 'premier' pair of P. leopardus L600 variant. It has been over 2 years since these last spawned. Unfortunately the male pulled the female out of the cave before she was done laying eggs and they were still attached to her. I was not able to artifici...

Re: L97 sexing
You might have one surprise but most likely males. One way to sex them is the pelvic fins. They need to be flared out to see the difference. Males are flat across the back of the fins and the female's fins look more like teardrops. At the stated sizer should be easy to see.

Re: 2014 All Aquarium Catfish Convention
We are all set to arrive Friday afternoon. Unfortunately I will have very little to bring. Since meeting Ingo last year in New Jersey my L600 pairs have had 6 healthy spawns. Something in my tanks has forced me to watch the fry die off 1-2 months later. This happens only with my pseuda fry. Many gre...
