Black Plecostomus with yellow spots sold as "Flash Pleco", positive of mislabeling, help ID?

Post by Vestyxe »

I bought a small black Pleco today in a store labeled as "Flash Pleco"
I found it to be a particularly nice looking fish, asked an assistant a few questions to see if this Pleco needed any special requirements (I only have experience keeping Bristlenoses) he said it was pretty much the same level of care, so I purchased it for £20, took it home and began to acclimate it, etc, later on I decided to do more research and near enough every picture I found had a Pleco with white or sort of orange stripes while mine (still a juvenile) has bright yellow spots, I'm rather confused and require the assistance of someone more knowledgable than I, If anybody could be as kind as to confirm or ID the fish I'd really appreciate it. Thanks.

Also, I'm sorry I couldn't get a better picture, camera is poor quality and the fish is pretty shy, this was one of the only chances I got.

I agree.

Care is basically the same as the P. albivermis aka L204, aka Flash Pleco. They are a little different from Ancistrus in that they are much more wood eaters and would appreciate a decent quantity of driftwood for them to gnaw and munch on.

Agreed - underfed specimens or those without wood have been known to destroy hard plants like Anubias, so wood is a must really

Thanks Racoll, thanks Andy and thank you Richard, big help - really appreciate it.

One more thing, about the price, since they probably priced it at the value of the other fish, did I get ripped off at all?

I've got two fair sized bits of wood in there.

Price varies an awful lot between stores & on the size of the fish.

You certainly haven't been ripped off!

I agree. I think you actually got a deal on them. Mustard Spots (their common name) typically go for a little bit more. Although size can factor a lot in the price. You definitely weren't ripped off.

Either way I really like the fish and wouldn't have felt too bad about it, I was just curious.

Thanks, guys, nice forum - I'll come straight here whenever I have any future issues or confusion with catfish.
