Sexing my six Hypancistrus sp. L66

Post by Haavard Stoere »

Hi all :) There has been a lot of "sex my fish" threads recently, and here is yet another one. Hope it`s ok.

Fish 1-5 measures 8,5-9,5 cm tl. Fish nr 6 is 12cm tl.

As you can see fish 6 seems to be a male even if he not is in the best breeding condition yet, all the other fishes have just started to be mature but not spawn before, nr 4 still to small. Their genital papilla is not so well developed yet but condition them for a while and they will soon start to show much more clearly sex differencies, they are easy to sex the day they are in breeding condition. You have most females

Thank you Janne! I really appreciate your opinion :D

The largest one I got from my friend Andreas. The 5 sub-adults I picked out at the lfs. I took them all out, and I tried to pick out two males and four females. Don`t know what happened to the 6th fish. It just dissapeared.

I forgot to ask the most important question... Are they the same species?
Fish 1-5 were bought together in a shop as L66. Fish 6 was bought from a local aquarist.

I don`t want to create hybrids.

I hope it's alright if I resurrect this older thread, I was searching for threads on sexing synos and this came up.

I would be most interested in if anyone can answer Haavard's last question, whether or not they are all L066 as I have two, I think, and it would help me to determine mine.

I am still wondering about this, and I feel a certain importance since they are likely to breed this winter.

I'm fairly convinced that ALL synos have a sexing guide on the respective Cat-eLog datasheet (page). If you know of one that doesn't, please let me know (by posting in the "bugs section", and I'll do the required copy'n'paste work. [Basicly, hold the fish belly-side up and look at it's "bits" - pointed or rounded tells you what they are - there are pictures in some of the syno datasheets too, and all Syno's should be the same in this respect].

Sorry that I can't help on the other part of this thread.

There is one yellow specimen that looked a lot like an L333.

you are def right Mats, it has it in words for the eupterus but not pics, I was just hoping for pics, as in posters pics. Mine all have prominant sexual organs now and I was just looking for like pics to confirm. Then when I found this I was all ..hey! I have those too and cannot tell either. Then also wondered if Haavard had ever determined.

That seems kind of logical since fish nr. 6 was bought separately from the other 4.

Anyways... Next weekend I will auction all of these away. I want to use the tank for other loricarid species more to my liking.
