My 'untrained' eye would also agree with Richard. What size are they? According to the cat-elog, can reach 5.2", whereas is smaller at 3.8".

A year or perhaps a little more ago i saw some Rhinodoras (at Pier, i think) that were brilliant value for money & were 5-7" TL. I thought those were likely to be boehlkei which would fit with cat-e-log SL measurement but did they have any growing still to do??? Stores often don't but in a large quantity of adult fish, but that may have been the case in that instance.

In my war against trumpet snails - where many battles were lost despite weapons like traps, siphoning, loads of fruit and veggies, Botias and puffers - I will now admit myself some foul play and introduce a shortly. I've done so a long time ago and know for sure that this will work.
Major disadvantage: it'll be a temporary guest, due to its size......

One of my all time favourites too, but as you say, sadly too large for most aquariums long term.

I got half a dozen assassin snails a couple of weeks ago to combat the MTS. Upon introduction the buried themselves in the coral sand never to be seen again :( The MTS continue to thrive. I have the use of a pteradoras granulosus if i want but i don't think he'd like the tanganyikan conditions :frown:

You'll have a more than a good few years before it outgrows the tank, my experience of Doradids is that they grow painfully slowly. Who knows by the time it is too big you could be in a position to have a larger tank and keep it.

Some wood or pipes for them to hide in would be nice instead of them having to play who can get closest to the box filter in the corner. Nice collection though, great markings on those Megladoras

Is this really your permanent set up? Indeed, as CFC says, provide them with sand and pieces of wood so they can display some natural behaviour.

Richard, there are several Tanganyikans that eat snails.
Synodontis granulosus for example. they eradicated all my snails......baby MTS are fair game.
if you have bigger snails Synodontis polli (the REAL polli, not the PWZ) is a ferocious snaileater, capable of killing and eating fully grown Inca- or Applesnails. they love ramshorn and pondsnails

the best solution to fight an MTS infestation in a Tanganyikan tank is twofold: the combination of a single tret (Neolamprologus tretocephalus) and a group of Ectodine cichlids, any species will do.

the Ectodines will chew sand around the clock and rob the MTS of foodparticles. outcompete them in fact.
the tret can and does chew and crush baby and halfgrown MTS. this particular species has specialized teeth on the pharyngeal apparatus. this is a specialized mollusc eater.

trets have a nasty reputation, but this is only true when you have a mated pair that breeds. also, their intraspecies agression is huge, matching them is not easily done.
a sole tret is remarkably docile. i've kept a fair number and they completely ignore catfishes and even ectodines.
I've combined trets with species like Cyathopharynx foai from Kabogo and even with Xenotilapia and they do just fine.

Doradidae; this is not a definite tank, no? because it's just a way of keeping them alive as seen at importers, not a proper set-up to keep fish.

Sid - i wasn't considering a doradid in my set-up!

My grannys & polli don't seem to make a dent in the population at all :( I'm not really that concerned but they do look unsightly.

it's interesting info about the "tret" though  that's definately worth a try

and something to chew sand as well.

if Ectodines are not your cup of tea, how about a pair of Limnochromis auritus?
very peaceful, perfect co inhabitant with catfishes and it'll keep the sand spotless.

however my favourite Tanganyikan sandclean-up crew is more like this:

Doradidae, how about ?
another mediumsized doradid with great looks and the behaviour is much more active than compared to it's counterpart .

you still didn't answer the question of at least 3 people in here: the blue tank with 6" of water; is it a holding tank just for the pix or do you actually keep them in it?

because it's understandable for making pix (doradids are champions at hiding), but if it's permanent, well....that's no fishkeeping in my book.
cruelty to animals, yes, but the hobby we know as fishkeeping? no.

Perhaps before you make any remark,
there is some important fact that you need to know.

1st, different country got different type of lifestyle.
(mine is stay in very small little boxes high up some story)
tank size will upgrade as they grow bigger for sure.

2nd, if that is consider cruelty than dun keep fish go around the whole world LFS...
be an officer because where they sell most of them in small little tank.

to me I will say I do like them alot and everyday after work will check on them and off the light as i think they like it that way. I dun use the word we cos this is consider my own thinking. For me I dun say bad about other who use fake plants for deco. If you seen my other post at other forum I post alot about them.

For me I WISH to get a mega tank for my catfish with strong system and sand too just like in the nature.
But...$$..space...family complain(I dun own the whole house) so at the moment it is rubber tank for me.
No body care to reply to you cos you most properly end up angry as you are not open to understand enough.
Cruelty is fishing...the painful hook on the fish lip. :)

Doradidae,

You are right pointing out what people consider cruelty depends on their culture. However, if we would ask the fishes, your Platydoras would answer probably the same as mine - but we cannot ask them

Still i think Sid does have a point: dorarids do need shelter, and the way your pond looks on the pics does lack such shelter. Therefore I would strongly recommend adding shelter, and perhaps raising the waterlevel. It looks like the pond can be filled to almost twice its current level

Regarding room, I might want to keep Pangasius, but they grow to a yard, or more, and need a tank of over 10 meter - therefore I cannot keep Pangasius. Period

Sorry, but I disagree with the keeping of fishes this way on several grounds.

first you say this:
1st, different country got different type of lifestyle.
doesn't float my boat at all. "culture differences" are no excuse for improper fishkeeping, or improper keeping of animals of any kind.
in china for example they wedge fully grown bears in little mesh cases, put a hole in their belly and drain off the gall.
might be "Chinese medication" but it's cruelty to animals of the worst kind.
in any book. there's too much "hiding behind cultural alibi" around all over the globe, here too.
but i won't fall for it.

second:
2nd, if that is consider cruelty than dun keep fish go around the whole world LFS...
be an officer because where they sell most of them in small little tank.
fish kept in a LFS are kept in transition; they come and go.
keeping the fish in the same way as they are generally kept at wholesalers or LFS is not done.
a fishtank should be an attempt to give the fish OPTIMUM parameters, not minimum!

third:
For me I WISH to get a mega tank for my catfish with strong system and sand too just like in the nature.
But...$$..space...family complain(I dun own the whole house) so at the moment it is rubber tank for me.
then you should refrain from buying fish AT ALL.
if you can't afford to buy a tank, why buy the fish?
ever heard of responsibility for one's own actions and of responsibility for one's own pets?
should have left the fishes in the LFS in the store until you could house them properly, but you didn't.

that's irresponsible behaviour and there's simply no excuse for that anywhere.

it's like buying a huge dog when all you have is a 1 room appartment. or making five kids but lacking the income to raise them in a home.

you just wanted those fishes without giving thought to keep them in a good way, in a well set-up tank.

no, you're definitely not making it any better with "excuses" like this.
I see someone who's into shopping spree, but lacks the discipline to keep thje wallet shut and pass on a fish he can't keep.
not good.

and please.....dfon't "hide" behind so called "culture", because then you diminish the ones in those countries who DO know how to keep fish as it should be done, and I dare say there are plenty fishkeepers in Asia who do run proper fishtanks. don't hide your own shortcomings behind others.
Perhaps before you make any remark,
there is some important fact that you need to know.
and perhaps you should think before you open your wallet and buy.
here's an important thing YOU should know:
anyone, even the most incompetant ignorant or careless person can buy live fish.
unfortunately not everyone can or will house the same fish adequately.

I rest my case.

There is no problem with the actual "tank" apart from it could maybe be a little bigger for some of the larger growing species, keeping fish in these big tubs is no worse than keeping fish in a man made pond and the fish probably prefer not being gawped at through the sides like they are in a glass tank, but the fish would definitely appreciate some sort of decor in the tank to hide in or under, you can see they are desperate for some cover by the way they are all cramming into the corner. Just some large diameter plastic pipe for them to get inside would be an improvement.

I used to have a nice colection of Dorids, and Heptaterids, but then one of the latter, bought as Pimelodella gracilis - but it grew to 30 cm or more, and was very shy indeed, died. Died without me noticing until it was too late.

I lost all my catfish in that tank, and almost all cichlids. And I mad a mental note never to keep Heptaterids again - which is kind of hard to do, as I still had 7 Rhamdia queten.

My Dorids collection is now 2 Platydoras cf costatus, which I got in November 1988 @ 10 cm. I think they must reach 30 this year.
