Science News: Clariidae - Clarias batu

Post by Silurus »

Synopsis by Shane Linder

Kelvin Lim and Ng Heok Hee have described Clarias batu from the island of Pulau Tioman in the South China Sea. The fish inhabits freshwater torrent streams which drain the hilly interior of the island. The water is cool and clear with a neutral pH. The substrate is sand, rocks, and large granite boulders. This fish is nocturnal and appears to be a predator. It was easily captured on hook and line using banana fritters and corned beef (somebody's lunch?). The description contains many black and white photos as well as good line drawings of the genital papillas of both sexes.
