Live FishCam: I think I'm having Synodontis babies! Look!

Post by Sandee »

Havent's posted in a while - hello again!

Sort of excited about this ... I remember reading that Synodontis Multiplicatus like to 'borrow' their female Cichlid friends when breeding. I thought I saw one of the Multi's dancing around with the two Cichlids when they started to spawn last week. Well - she was holding ... and when I took a look at her eggs ... out popped 6 eggs that didn't look like the previous she had. These little guys have a long 'spine' already ... even with the egg sack. Below, is a live FishCam view into that breeding tank. Do you think they're really baby Synos?

Sure they could be.

Like the fish cam.

What were the Cichlids that you used?

It was one of my 'teen' OBs. These guys breed like rabbits! It was one of the baby OBs that came from my original OBs. I've got a pair of Multis - had no idea they were m/f ... so it was a nice suprise! The fry are growing fast - only about a week now, and the egg sack is getting smaller and smaller ... very cool to watch. I've had many Cichlid fry, always amazing - but these 7 little cat babies are very special! Too bad my Grannies won't mate!

;)

Thanks for checking out the site too! Keep watching, I change the webcams around everyday ...

Yes little cats are always cool!

Keep them well fed when their egg sac is gone or they can turn on each other for the first bit.

Well - this just in ... now that they're about 2 weeks old, I can tell much better - :(

They're just little Cichlids, not the baby Multis I was hoping for. Maybe next time! There's no lack of trying in that tank ...

This isn't an impossible dream - obviously you need a mix of sexes but people have had unfertilized eggs & spawning behaviour - so a "hobbyist" breeding them is 'just around the corner'.

Of the guy who spawns them down south commercially - i do know they produce few eggs & that the sexes are kept apart & conditioned up separately, then brought together for the spawning attempt - it would need a hell of a lots of space, tanks & patience to accomplish this as a hobbyist, but it'll happen sooner or later - it's been done by a breeder - i've seen the adults, fry, set-ups etc - a dedicated hobbist must achieve it soon
Lou: Every young man's fantasy is to have a three-way.
Jacob: Yeah not with another fu**!ng guy!
Lou: It's still a three-way!
