Bought A snowball plec but hes brown with yellow spots

Post by Dj-Funk »

10 days ago I bought a snow ball plec from my LFS. Hes very happy and settled in well but Ive started to wonder these last couple of days whether he is a snowball.

Everything Ive read says snow ball with be black bodied with white spots. As hes got more confident and come out of hiding mine is definately brown bodied with yellow spots.

Id love to show you a photo of him but hes not having any of it

This is a pic of him on arrival.

Any help guys??

It's a L201 or a H. contradens.

this is what I was told by describing them at another LFS. So how do they compare in price to a snowball??

This is one of the problems with common names. L201, and about a dozen other plecos, go by that same common name. A price comparison can't be made with another fish without knowing what type you're comparing to. Nearly all dark with large white/light yellow spots plecos either have been, or currently are, sold as snowball plecos.

Ah ok well thats makes complete sense. So if I said I paid £30 for my now L201 that is probably 1.5 to 2 inches from a LFS would that be fair price?

I honestly don't know how pricing in the UK is for plecos. Someone else will have to provide that info. Here in the US, I would expect to pay $25-30 retail for that fish.

Depends on the lfs to be honest but 15 to 30 pounds tends to be going price for these

I don't know the prices in the uk.
Here in Belgium you pay (lfs)for a snowball +/- the double than L 201
