Spawning Regularity of Corydoras sterbai

Post by Dragonrat »

I have a pair of sterbai, who have spawned every few weeks in my plec/community tank since I got them nearly two years ago. I'm in the process of setting up another tank for them, but they've ramped up how often they spawn. Before, it was every three to six weeks. They spawned three times in the first two weeks of this year, and have spawned on three days of the last four. I'm getting a bit concerned. Nothing has changed with water quality, tank mates or feeding. Is this normal?

It's just another sign that the apocalypse is approaching.

Seriously, I don't think it's anything worry about. I'm not sure anything about corydoras breeding is normal. The strangest things can trigger breeding or stop it.

Count your blessings and hatch all you can. This won't last forever and they could take a break longer than 6 weeks

Thanks. Do the parents need to be removed after spawning?

I remove the eggs with my hand and put them in a container with an air stone. Float it in the tank and I add meth blue. Eggs hatch a few days later and I them feed walter worms. After another day they are placed into a fry saver for a month or two.

Sterbai eggs hatch at higher Temps than some of the other colder cories. That's why the container is placed back into the tank to keep the water around 80 degrees
