Planiloricaria whiskers are eroding

Hi

I have 2 Planiloricaria that I have had for about 2 years that are great.
I just got 3 more which are in a quarantine tank, they seem to be ok, and have just started eating, but the very end of thier whiskers have started to erode away. They are in with a couple of Pseudohemiodon which are fine.

Any ideas on what to treat with?? I am assuming it is bacterial and was going to try melafix.

Current params:
Temp 76
ph approx 6.9
ammonia, nitrate, nitrite right around 0.

The fish are in a 30 log with a bare bottom and 2 large sponges.

Any help would be great.

Any idea about the water perameters they came from?

The very ends were curled when they arrived and i am thinking that it may have been ammonia in the bags that damaged them when they were shipped. They have not got any worse in the last few days, I have been changing lots of water and hope they will grow back shortly. They are certainly eating very well these days.

Any comments still welcome on other people who have kept these...

Congrats. I only kept one specimen once, but really enjoyed it. I think you are correct not to treat with any medication. Sounds like ammonia burns and good water quality (and time) should heal all.
They really need a good two inches of sand to bury themselves in and no top swimmers. Keep them with things that will not compete with them for food. Mine starved because the tetras in the tank were eating all the good stuff before the Planiloricaria ever got to it. I believe Ingo has spawned them.

maybe the combination Pseudohemiodon and Planiloricaria isn't a good one.

I'm not overly familiar with these, but AFAIK Pseudohemiodon can be fairly territorial to similar shaped fish and speciesmembers......
