Keeping mixed size plecos together
Keeping mixed size plecos together
I have an 18" Megalancistrus, a group of 5-6" Leporacanthicus (4 different species) and a few 2-3" L114s. These fish are currently separated in 3 tanks. Seems most plecos are aggro with others same or similar sized. What are your thoughts on how these would do together? Wondering if because their sizes are quite different if they may ignore each other?…or do you think the Mega will just kill everyone else?
Thanks
Thanks

Re: Keeping mixed size plecos together
I'm always wary of mixing too many plec species of varying temperments - for example i've seen 4" panaque albivermis harrass 1" zebra plecs to the point of death before they were separated.
Obviously space & territory contributes to the problem if there is not enough - how big would the tank be for all of them? It's not something i'd do personally

That mix is all going to be relatively capable of doing damage. It would have to be an awfully good sized tank with a lot of hiding spots for me to risk it.

Re: Keeping mixed size plecos together
Your mega is way oversized for the others. It's size alone will cause accidents. If it gets startled anything between it and a hiding spot or the side of the tank is toast! Yes the can co-exist in a tank as long as there is plenty of cover and food but I have found dead fish trapped under moved tank decorations.

Re: Keeping mixed size plecos together
I guess the Mega will remain a solo bottom fish, think Ill add some small characins to clean up his scraps, he's a messy eater.
Thank you for the opinions everyone.

Re: Keeping mixed size plecos together
I can't speak for your specific fish, but I have 20cm+ L190s kept with smaller L002, L81 and a couple of other smaller plecs and Corydoras sterbai. So far the only aggression I've seen is between the group of L190, they seem uninterested in the others, even when the cories are swimming all over them. They do have a 1.2x2.4M footprint and plenty of hiding spaces (and open ground) though.
