New species: I like a higher pH than 8 and I look a bit like what some east Londoners might consider a fishy delicacy.

There are just 5 species in the clog wrt that pH level and none of those look like porpoise, dolphin or seal (quote: And, on ‘Fish Days’ in the 16th century, East Enders would feast on porpoise, dolphin and seal).

maybe the jelly is a clue...

if it is, then it's probably a Lophiobagrus species, because these can secrete a LOT of jelly-like slime when stressed or caught in a net

a single Lophiobagrus in a small jar can turn the water into jelly; the end result is a jar full of jelly and 1 dead fish.

since Lophiobagrus cyclurus is by far the better known species my gamble is on that 1:

strange btw that the pH for cyclurus is different from brevispinis, but both species are from the same habitat....

also the breeding data for cyclurus don't match; it is NOT a mouthbrooder and it shows the same bi-parental breeding care that brevispinis does

I've bred both species and the way of spawning them is exactly the same.

the one exception is that it's much harder to get a matching pair of the cyclurus, due to their strong intraspecific agression


in brevispinis a male anmd a female are a pair.
in cyclurus a male and a female are most likely 1 fish harassing or killing the other, regardless of tanksize, unless with sheer luck, they match and pair off.

my own experience was that only the fourth attempt resulted in a matching pair and those were F1 fishes
I never got a matching pair from wildcaught cyclurus.

Saggy-bummed Anglo fish. Saggy-faced Anglo fish? Either way it describes my English relatives...Saggy, flatish jowls? I just can't see it on the fish with my inexperienced eyeballs... Cute fish though.

I thought the foodstuff reference was to "jellied eels", so was looking for a thin eel-like fish whose pH range exceeded 8...therefore a clariid from tanganyika......?

Hehehe, I knew those clues would throw you off. The delicacy of London is fishy not mammalian - if people in here started eating dolphins there would be anarchy in the UK! Lake Tanganyika is not the only body of water with a higher pH and eel like fishes, there are many more fishes in the sea.

This is not a pretty fish.

Nicely done, that's correct. It's an eel like fish, lives in ph>8. The extra clue was "Anarchy in the UK" that should lead you to "sid" which is, phonetically, the beginning of this fishes name.

Afaik, Cn is pronounced as "N", which would sound as Needoglanis. Btw: the data sheet confirms this. No big deal however.
Anyway, how come the Clog seach option doesn't come up with this fish when entering PH min 8 and PH max 9 ?

Because if you give a max and a min for temp or pH, it limits the list to those fish that are tolerant of both ends of the spectrum. Since this fish is at 8-8.6, it will be excluded from the "9.0" that you give as an upper limit. If you give 8-8.5 in the range, it will list it.

I was first thinking of Synodontis annectens, but that turned out to be in the Clog. Atm I fail to see the barbels clue, yet with Lothar and teeth I'd like to go for Synodontis polyodon (not in the Clog and many teeth to clean ).
