Synodontis ocellifer latin name etymology addition

Post by Iwona »

In my oppinion the specific name of Synodontis ocellifer means “little eyes bearer” (just like Lucifer=light bearer or light bringer) and comes from ocellus (plural ocelli) = little eye (eyes) and “-fer”, a suffix coming from the irregular verb fero (fers, ferre, tuli, latum) that means to bring (to carry, to bear).

Thanks for the suggestion:
I have changed the "etymology" to a compromise between the original and your suggestion:
Cat-eLog wrote: ''ocellifer'', having little eyes, from ''ocellus'', diminutive of ''oculus'', eye and "ifer" meaning "to carry".
