As I understand it, the book is so big now that the English translation in unlikely to get published. It might be that the removal of the Neoplecostiminae from it might bring it back down to size but the additions/revisions in English mean it's unlikely. Tragic really.

Beyond tragic. I know so many people who want to own it. Why can't they just divide it into 2 volumes? People will still purchase it!

I mean, there's also 6 volumes in the regular Aquarien Atlas series, but I'll bet only half are translated.

I'm soooooooo glad I can read, write and speak German!

I am unsure how much is commerical and how much is the simple fact the binding / spine won't take such a thick book. How much does the Wels Atlas Vol 1 sell for in the US? You're looking at twice that roughly. Do you really think, in the current climate (hate that phrase) it will sell?

I think they're missing a trick. The time for this book will pass.

The Wels Vol.1 I purchased was somewhere around $55 American a few years ago. Volume 2 was more than that.

Recieved this reply from an email to mergus requesting a publication date...
Sorry, the Catfish Atlas 2 will not be published. The author
has done nearly the same book with a few other publishers,
so we see no chance to compete.

best regards
Mergus

Actually, a lot of the really technical words are very similar.

It's entirely worth getting the German issue, as you can glean a surprisingly large amount of information from it.

Not to mention the photos serve as a good ID guide, and justify the outlay on their own!

That's what I was wondering. They better not mean the Back to Nature guide because that's certainly not the same.

Hi,
So what are these books?
there also is a small(ish) book exclusively on Hypancistrus, called "Hypancistrus-Fibel".
And in due course, a book on breeding pecos, titled "Ingos Harnischwelszucht", will be published here in Germany.
Taking those together with the BtN-Book, it might get somewhere.
Still, IMHO there is nothing compared to the WA2!

EDIT: Completely forgot the "MiniAtlas L-Welse", a book covering all L-Numbers from L1-L400. It is by other authors, but really does contain all those fishes with at least one picture. No described species without L-Number, though.

Cheers, Sandor

In that case, the publisher's reply is misleading. The reply implies that other English-language books on similar subject(s) [a general guide on catfishes notwithstanding] have been written and published elsewhere by the authors. So, if the other books have been in German, publishing an English translation of Atlas 2 would not be in direct competition, since an English book would serve a different market.

So, the statement that
we see no chance to compete
makes no sense at all in the light of this information.

chances are, with say 100 German words, and a very basic knowledge of German grammar, you might get over 80 % of what a German can get from the book

After all, it all relates to fish, size, water, growth, where thay come from, what they eat and how they behave

Yes, however some of the finer points on ID are quite hard to get even from a computer generated translation. Another point is that the English translation that's been done is also an updated and revised text from the German language book in print.

It's not self published and the publisher has no E-book infrastructure or DRM solution. In short, it's too hard.

Pretty poor form IMO, last time I checked there was other countries than the US that spoke English, and with the massive increase in the keeping of catfish around the globe it seems silly to me for them not to go ahead.

That would feel right to me too, but off the back of sales of the first book (in English) it's not reality. Sadly, we are not buying enough books... Maybe that is not the whole picture, but it's part of it.

I am also lucky that I can read and write german and english.
Why do they not just post it on the net and people pay a user fee to look at it etc, instead of piblishing it ? I am sure there must be a way for a book that HAS already been translated to be available on the net ? Just a thought cheers jk b-)
