World Cup 2006

Post by Jools »

It's nearly time! I have set-up a fantasy football league for anyone who wishes to join in the fun. It's setup via the Metro Free World Cup Fantasy Football League and ours is called the League of Duffers. For those who don't know, a duffer is someone who is not very good at pretty much anything.

You can register at http://fantasyfootball.metro.co.uk

Once you have logged in and entered your team, click on the 'Leagues' link you can find on the left of the page. Now enter the code 7525-1549 to join our "private" league.

Cheers,

Jools

Yeah, we did quite well actually. I really think we would be there if we didn't have the "Berti years".

Even though the US football club is the red-headed, left handed step children (no offense meant to those who are) of the World Cup, I still pony up to the TV at 3 a.m. to watch the Cup live.

Pity those who live in the football desert that is the US.

Sorry Dave, don't agree. I think your statement is much more appropriate for the Togo-team than the US-team.
Mind you, DaMarcus Beasley plays for PSV-Eindhoven :D

I think I can count the number of Americans who play at the top levels of football and are prominant in your part of the World where the sport is shown the proper ravenous interest on the fingers of one hand . . .

When the US team does qualify for the Cup there is much whooping and yahooing in my realm as they are a plucky bunch, but the previous droughts during my 40 years prompted my desert comment.

I live in a "soccer" hotbed, if you can call it that. There are more year-round (yes, indoor Winter) youth leagues than the rest of the US. What happens when these kids turn 16 is a mystery. Articles have been written about it. Some think parents push too hard and the kids burn out. The kids that aren't burning out are inner city children of immigrants from Brazil, Jamaica, Trinidad, etc. They're ready for the next Cup, but which team?

The American "soccer" leaguers are treated like second tier athletes here. No doubt. They do use the same stadia as the NFL teams and their gear is sold in the pro shop, but they don't have the same privledge nor status. It's so strange when you consider how many children here play "soccer" from the age of 3 on! :screwy:

Amanda,

I've lived in a area here in the southeast where 1700 kids were enrolled in youth soccer, from little guys and girls to 15 and 16 years olds. And this was in a town with a population of about 5000. Every summer semi-pros from Europe would come and instruct.

But its just as you say, Amanda, when they are teenagers, its like someone turns off a switch. Some high school barely draw enough kids to field a team. Even a prominant team barely rates a blip in the local media. Its sad.

To my experience, its the parents of the younger kids that berate them and take things far too seriously. I was a sports editor for 15 years here, and have seen parents fight each other physically because one child was more successful in the sport than another. Disgusting. Europe doesn't have a corner market on soccer hooligans. I can see that soccer could leave a bad taste in the kids mouth. They probably equate it to eating broccoli, or taking piano lessons on Saturday.

I for one a absolutely on pins and needles waiting for the World Cup to begin. I am going to try to record every game not only so I can watch it, but so I can review them with my U9 team next year (I coach my 8yo. son's team and will also be coaching U6 in the fall as well).

My U8 season ends tonight, wish us luck. We are 1-6 on the season so far, not at all what I had hoped for at the beginning of the season. That said, my team has shown one heck of alot of improvement in play from our first game! I am very proud of how far they have come.
Sincerely,
Paul E. Turley

Hi!

A bit off topic, but I was in Geneva yesterday to see the Friendly between Brasil and New Zealand (hey Guys you are much better in Rugby...;-) ) really enjoy the game and the little aftergame party put up by the brasilan side with Samba and stuff...
Well was my only chance to see them play as I jsut can't go and afford going seeing them playing in Germany...

It was a good game...Brasil wasn't playing much like they do except the last 10-15 minuites when they started to shift gear...

Rumo ao Hexa!!!

Cheers

:(

Alas,my wife asked me recently "what I wanted for my birthday"?
(she won't buy me anything fish related as a present)

I asked for a Brazil Shirt with Adriano on the back.

She hunted high and low in all the stores within a 20 mile radius..No one does Adriano!!!!!!!
So she had to buy me something else.

Well I look on the bright side..

Always difficult in these leagues...if you pick the players you like youll likely not win and if you pick them by good team/weak opponents you have a bunch of idiots (aka Team Germany) compiled. :D

The US team looked like 11 tourists in search of a hotel. Bruce Arena called out individual players in the post-game press conference. I'm used to the team getting called out for bad play. Do other coaches call out individual players for poor play in public?

Not often, the Czechs were good mind you but the US defence was the worst I've seen it in years.

Performance of the first round might go to the Australians but lets see what Brazil do.

I heard a very good comment on the commentary today.

"No wonder the Brazilians keep winning against European teams, they're used to the weather. The World Cup is always in a hot country in the summer. I wonder how they would get on playing on Tyneside in February?"

Was'nt there a Brazilian that played for Newcastle in the 80'S? and hated it when It went cold.
and there that one who played on Teeside, who seemed to only play well against good opposition in the summer months?

Its quite common on German Bundesliga teams that most people dont expect anything from Brazilians during winter.

This weather is kinda rediculous. When I mailed 10 days ago with my american buddy whos come over to watch a game I adviced for a winter hat and thick jacket as we had around 10°C just two Weeks ago with snow in Bavaria and nightfrost warnings all over the country.

Hey we kept them to single digits !!! Not bad considering the total lack of international competition our guys get. We are talking Brazil here, for our guys just to get a game was fantastic.
