wow that's just great! something like this, it's a dream for me!

but i am always afraid of the amount of time a fishroom like this will obviously take for maintenance only! how much time do you spend in there a week, just for maintenance?

At the moment, every day, I spend 10 minutes at 06:30 when I get up in the morning feeding and checking nothing has blown up, flooded or died. In the evening I spend 30 minutes at around 18:30 feeding and doing water changes as well as (at the moment) setting up filters and heaters, wiring and moving fish to their final tanks. Having a baby in the house makes such a routine rather the more easy to follow.

About once a week I spend an hour or two painting new tanks, doing big wiring jobs or just tidying up.

Glad you like it. On the tank alarm - can you point me at your "el cheapo" one that is much less than £50/US$50? I'd like to use these, but at the kind of prices I've seen for them, I'd only really use them on the big tank, maybe.

Check this link or this.

I have one and use it on one of my tanks in the other room when I do water changes... I needed to muffle some of the alarm. Quite loud.

Hi Jools,

It looks like you already got a good link to one but I found this one as well. There's also mechanical ones but I can't find them on a quick search.
http://cgi.ebay.ca/Horizontal-Float-Swi ... 240%3A1318

If you can't get it from ebay.UK, I could order one and ship it over. It would be light to ship and I already have an account.

I'll keep my eyes open for anything else to fit the bill,

Hi Jools,
Didn't know if you found something suitable yet but tank alarms and a mechanical float version can be found here:http://www.fortyfathoms.net/pb/wp_25838 ... 38b2a.html. Nice fellow, name is Jim if you email him. Shipping from Ontario would be about $6.95. $8.95 if it doesn't quite fall under the weight/size restrictions.
Cheers!

I've fixed the problem with a stupid hat. I wear it when I am running water in this fishroom and it's a little sore. I means I look like an idiot, but then some might say that isn't a big change and indeed I have yet to flood the fishroom since adopting this trick.

I will look into these alarms however as I need a something for the sump under the big display tank.

Hope to post some youtube footage of the room soon too,

Cheers,

How you doing mate?
Just got back onto the site after a long absenteeism (new business, way to busy!!). Congratulations firstly to yourself and Claire on the newish arrival (the baby that is, bumped into your bro) and well done on the fishroom/extension. Looks fantastic, puts my office/fishroom to shame. Should catch up sometime, if you've got any time that is?
Cheers Marc
PS I'm still having some success breeding the Zebs, have decided to put a little more time and effort in now.

Maybe if we all post a pic of our ugliest/embarrassing/pathetic fish related object? I have a particularly vile light set-up at the moment that embarrasses me all to heck. I keep cutting it out in my tank pics...

C'mon, 4 foot light with aluminum tape over a three foot tank? There's even an ugly huge construction grade extension cord wired into it...yellow! Ewww! Your hat can't be worse than that.

I'll send you maple syrup too.

Nice Jools.

How are you finding condensation in your room ?

I use a dehumidifer to help keep the condensation down, but still have some condensation, probably because my hut is only single skin, and the extremes of the inside temperature and outside temperature is quite a lot in the winter.
It is getting pretty marked in behind the tanks, a couple of feet up from floor level, so in the summer i going to clean the marks and tile the bottom half of the hut, on all four walls, plus the floor behind the racks out to the front of the tanks.
I should just need a cloth to wipe up any condensation then, and tiles shouldn't discolour like painted wood can, wish i had thought about tiling the room when doing it, it would have helped a lot.

It's their winter home. The goldies are my "test pilots", they go in every major new tank and whenever I use new substrate, fresh wood or the like, they are there. I've grown rather attached to them (and the three koi) - they've matured more filters than I could say. Actually, the tank now needs drained so that I can adjust its level now it's settled on the floor. It needs to be flush against the wall so that the fishroom noises and smells don't "leak" into the living room. Once that's done the sump (wet(hamburg)/dry, and heaters) under the big display tank will get set-up, the sump has an oxygenating chamber where the water rushes around, but will be at 86F - I've yet to decide what gold might live in there.

The goldies will be moving outside for the spring and the display tank (72"x18"x12") will become home to the current residents of my discus tank. The discus tank (48"x30"x18") is then getting prepared for a breeding project.

I took a video yesterday showing the whole thing running, talked through what was in each tank etc. Was quite happy with it as did it all live and unscripted.

It ran at 18 minutes and now I find youtube only host up to 10 minutes max. Darn! Meantime, here's another F1 in my fishroom:

There are a lot of your fish that don't get mentions but they were just not out when I was walking around. I might do a "special" on them later, but I think the next one will be a kit and process video.

It was the that bred.
