Suitable Ageneiosus tank mates for a Marmoratus

Post by Steve GT »

Right guys as you may know I have a marmoratus. He's 8-10 inches do not far from full size and now iv converted his eating to dry food I'm going to get some tank mates for him. Richard from wharf aquatics has rang me today and said he's got 6 Ageneiosus on order for next week but until they come he won't know what they are. I'm hoping there's a marmoratus or 2 in there.

So my question is if not what Ageneiosus would be suitable for him and what definitely isn't. Il still hunt like hell for a marmoratus if there isn't but would be nice for some company for him. Someone mentioned the Magoi would be good. Is this true and what else would be too? Thanks guys

Steve,
I reckon you've had some good advice to your other posts, but your wording in this post could be seen as discourteous and it may explain the lack of response. However I'm sure that was not your intention.

It will be interesting to hear what ageneiosus species Wharf are getting. The price of £30-£40 could be an indicator, but wait n see. The family vary in size a great deal and this is why magoi was suggested... its a similar-sized fish. Smaller ageneiosus sp are liable to be eaten.

Of other fish species, the issues are:
1. are they too small and will be eaten?
2. will they eat the food before the woodcats even see it?

You could try other woodcats, but one or the other won't get to the food.
Deep-bodied fish such as large (4"+) pearl or moonlight gouramies might work. In a group these are showy fish but they are not too aggressive or greedy. They certainly wouldn't bother the ageneiosus.

Right the only thing they've sent over is one Ageneiosus vittatus. It's 4 inches so will need to be seperate from the marmoratus at the min but Richard at wharf says once grown He'l be fine with the Marmaratus. Any thoughts or advice on the vittatus people?

Depends on what he thinks is vittatus.
I have 2 currently, which I bought as vittatus but turned out to be A. sp. 3 (see catelog).
These are slender fish, so I dare not combine them with marmoratus - otherwise I would have bought the 2 specimens available over here by long.
What you need to find out is thus: is he referring to the vittatus from the catelog or to the species that used to be called vittatus (= sp. 3).

wow its very suprising too that theres no registered keepers of the vittatus on here. Richard from wharf said there slightly rarer than the marmaratus but there surely not that rare

Hi Steve

That's because this species is (and I know of no exception) sold by the trade as A. vittatus but that probably isn't correct. It's not surprising this is the case as many hobby books perpetuate this misidentification. This sort of thing happens quite a lot.

Hope that helps,

Jools

went to see it its only a baby but does look a bit like the SP(3) so iv left it for now but my mate bought it and put it in one of his empty tanks and we agreed if it is a true vittatus il buy it off him if its not then he'll keep it. Win Win :D. I picked up a Sorubim Lima instead to go in with the Marmaratus just to keep him company while i find another Marmoratus or a Magoi. Il post a pick up of the vittatus now so you can advise wether its the true vittatus or not :)
