Re: Xmas wish list
Not very exciting, but
I had one many years ago, and has always been a real favourite of mine - the last PC day out spotted some and I am awaiting on some images of the undersides to see if I can choose at least a pair (may even take 3) - best thing is they are only about 2-3" and an hour or so away from me!

What makes you think the underside/belly will give their gender away?

Hmmmm. That's a good one - I think it still has to be , however right now I'd like an electrician house elf to help me with the fish room wiring!

According to the cat-elog
I was hoping to post some underside shots in the hope you might help to sex them 5 specimens I hae to choose from - is this info not correct then?Cat-eLog wrote: Males have a genital papilla which is a modification of the anal fin. Sexually mature males also have thicker and more robust dorsal and pectoral fin spines.

Re: Xmas wish list
The info is correct, yet of no use to you as you're talking about small specimens. The genital papilla in males develops relatively late (at approx. 6.5" and onwards) and the spines start getting more robust at the same time. So you might want to buy more individuals to get a pair from that lot eventually or wait until you find a batch of adult specimens and pick a pair.
Btw: I thought you had been told that belly colours or something like that could give away gender (which is incorrect); therefore I posed my question.
@Birger: sorry to get off topic here.
Xmas wish list: I hope to find a good home for my "redundant" cats and at the same time I wouldn't mind finding something like

Re: Xmas wish list
OK, thanks Marc - very useful info. Maybe this could be reflected in the catelog data for future reference?Marc van Arc wrote:The info is correct, yet of no use to you as you're talking about small specimens. I was going to get 2 if i could sex them, or three if not - at £30 each (or 3 for £80) that was about my max, so will just have to take my chances and go for the three.
No, was just taking the info as posted, but thanks anyway.Marc van Arc wrote: Btw: I thought you had been told that belly colours or something like that could give away gender (which is incorrect); therefore I posed my question.

Hey,
on my list are and probably will stay there for some time any species of Tanganikallabes.
Since for this Christmas I won't get them I'm going to buy new, nice, leather saddlebags for my cruiser .

Also maybe Syno Albolineatus as it's only known from a single specimen
Not to forget Gogo Ornatus, , , Astroblepus sp. (not in PC), , , , ............so many species..........so little tank space......

Richard,
You are a man of significantly good taste. I'd have a few of those, Shane & I have oft talked about , I am sure it's on both our lists. Hey, maybe I should have a cat-elog wishlist feature...

Re: Xmas wish list
if I believed in anything (Santa, odin, the flying spaghetti monster, god etc) on the top of my list would be any fish -even a sole bycatch- from the Anchariidae; that would mindblow me bigtime.
second best would be the rare Chrysichthys sianenna......not because i've been looking for it for almost 10 years, hasn't got anything to do with that, no sirrah
third best would be Rhamdia quelen cause now at least I have the tank, the waterparameters and robust tankmates for such a beastie.
IMO this little mini-buster would do just fine with the Madafish and the big Syno's.
fourth best is of course the fish that Marc and i have been tracking down with as much success as finding The fat man stuck in the chimney, the elusive Callichthys callichthys
and fifth; ah well, for the smaller tanks I'd really like to return to an old favorite and greatly overlooked genus: Amphilius
despite the looks, they're remarkably easier to keep than their Asian Sisorid counterparts. mine are long gone, but some lasted almost 10 years! one of the true beauties in the African catfish families.

Re: Xmas wish list
There are some really interesting fish that have been listed, I do not know how I have missed noticing but it looks great and an easily managed size as well.
I totally agree on any of the Anchariidae being "very" high on the list.
I would also add any of the other smaller synodontis species that are not commonly seen such as or Synodontis ricardoae(not in Cat-eLog) from Lake Rukwa...or some of the southern species.
Just noticed one thing, there is not a Loricariid mentioned yet...whats with that? I will throw one in...this one got my attention recently

frankly I'm stumped that none of the L-number crowd -about 3/4 of all catfish keepers- haven't asked for a Punk Pleco
Marc, those fish would make a great import!
I'd settle for availability, regardless of the family they're in.
great looks. they remind me of what once was called "Platytropius" (heck, maybe it IS Platytropius??)

Re: Xmas wish list
Geez, good question. Being in New Zealand now, pretty much anything would be nice.....
What I want is.....
Boraras brigittae
Sadly not permitted, so maybe I can get Boraras maculatus instead?
I also want some crystal red shrimp, but also banned
Parosphromenus, yeah right....
Trichopsis pumila is allowed, but can I find some?
How about a nice catfish? or (out of curiosity, would these be safe with Boraras or shrimp?) would be nice, but sadly they are banned species too.
If I want a however, I can drop into any pet store......
On the plus side, I can get me a Gobiomorphus breviceps, which is definitely not on the lists at Wildwoods or Pier!

Well yes, providing they are galaxiids (26 spp.) or eleotrids (7 spp.)!
Almost all of these are endemics.
The eleotrids (bullies) of the genus Gobiomorphus are rather nice, and G. breviceps appears adaptable enough to enjoy life in the aquarium (non-diadromous and has been bred). The redfin (G. huttoni) and bluegill (G. hubbsi) bullies are also really nice.

As for the galaxiids, most (Galaxias spp.) are upland coldwater rheophilic species, so they would be too difficult to maintain at home.

However the mudfish (Neochanna spp.) is a fish I would cut my arm off to keep. These are small-sized, lowland and tolerant species, and would be perfect in a tank. They also aestivate during the summer like a lungfish, and have a great look.
Sadly most are critically endangered, but while not illegal, I could not ethically take any.

I had one many years ago, and has always been a real favourite of mine - the last PC day out spotted some and I am awaiting on some images of the undersides to see if I can choose at least a pair (may even take 3) - best thing is they are only about 2-3" and an hour or so away from me!
