Breeding | ||||||||||
Behaviour | Male was entering the breeding burrow (earthenware pipe with 2cm in diameter) for about 2 weeks before the female followed him. There had been a kind of fight before the female entered the cave. (Maybe this was a kind of foreplay?) It seemed that also some other rineloricarias had been involved in this fight. But I could not find out if they had been males of females. Found about 80 eggs in the cave the day after. The female did not leave the breeding burrow for the next 12 days. It seemed that he always provided fresh water to the eggs with his flappers.
Eggs | There were 80 white-green eggs laid which were 1.5mm in diameter.

Segregation | 12 days after spawning I removed the breeding burrow (including the eggs and the male) from my main fish tank and put them into a separate "breeding" tank. 3 days after this action the first fry could be seen.

Fry and juvenile feeding | I feed the hatched fishes 3-4 times a day with "Nobil fluid Artemia" for the first week. After the first week I feed them 3-4 times a day with a mixture of spirulina powder and "Dupla eeze (Calanus finmarchius)" powder which I dissolve in some water. I only put some drops into the water, so that they swim in the food. After 10 day I also put some fresh hatched artemia into the tank. After 3 month I stopped feeding with powder and feeded solely with fresh hatched artemia. I also put the young fishes in a new tank with sand, because the old tank was too poluted and about 20 fishes died because of bad water quality. |
