Common Name
Type Locality Sungai Soraya, a tributary of Sungai Alas, Aceh Province, Sumatra, Indonesia.
Pronunciation HEM ee BAG russ - cahv ee ah tuss
Etymology From the Greek hemi- meaning half and bagrus, the catfish genus. From the Latin cavea, meaning cage; in reference to the cage-like pattern of stripes and bars on the sides of the body.

Identification Members of the genus Hemibagrus are bagrid catfishes that can attain standard lengths of up to 800 mm and are found in large rivers throughout the Indian subcontinent,Southeast and East Asia. Members of this genus have depressed heads,rugose head shields not covered by skin,a slender occipital process and moderately long adipose fins.

Hemibagrus caveatus falls under the H. menoda species group and is easily distinguished by the pattern of black bars/stripes forming a grid like pattern on the sides of the body.
Sexing Males have an elongate gential papilla in front of the anal fin.
General Remarks Although only specimens up to 200 mm SL have been observed this species probably reaches at least 400 mm SL like all other Hemibagrus.

Distribution Known only from the Alas River drainage in northern Sumatra.
