Type Locality Rio Marimbondo, tributary of Rio Preto, Rio Paraiba basin, 1 kilometer west of Visconde de Mauá, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Etymology Trichomycterus: From the Greek trichos, meaning hair and mykter, meaning nose; in reference to the barbels.
