Type Locality Rio Preto, near junction with the Santa Clara Creek, Rio Paraiba basin, Visconde de Mauá, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Etymology Trichomycterus: From the Greek trichos, meaning hair and mykter, meaning nose; in reference to the barbels.
