|Etymology||Callichthys: From the Greek kallos, meaning beautiful and ichthys, meaning fish; in reference to the color pattern. The specific epithet comes from the Latin serra meaning saw, and labium, lip, in allusion to the serrated free margin of lower lip.|
|Size||158mm or 6.2" SL. Find near, nearer or same sized spp.|
|Identification||Viewing the underside of the fish shows the lower lip to have a ragged, wavy profile. Young fish have a more striking vertically barred colouration.|
|Sexing||Males develop a thickened bright orange first ray in the pectoral fin, where females have a thin first ray.|
|Distribution||Described from drainages in the upper Orinoco River, near La Esmeralda, Venezuela and the headwatersof the Negro River, tributary of the Amazon River, both in Brazil and Venezuela.
