Type Locality Flat Creek, at state highway M39, 12 miles northeast of Cassville, Barry County, Missouri, U.S.A.

Etymology From the Greek notos, meaning back and oura, meaning tail. In reference to the confluent adipose and caudal fins. This specific epithet refers to the yellow (flavus = yellow) and black (ater = black) coloration.
