Type Locality	Ireng River, 6.9 kilometers west-southwest of Karasabai, Takutu River- Negor River drainage, 04.01957°N, 059.60170°W.

Etymology	Greek, hypo = under + Greek, stoma = mouth. Named for the Macushi people of northern Rupununi in Southern Guyana.
Species Information
Size	142mm or 5.6" SL. Find near, nearer or same sized spp.
Identification	Previously placed in Cochliodon and now included in the larger genus, Hypostomus as a member of the Hypostomus Cochliodon group. All these species have higher backs than other conspecifics and spoon shaped teeth (like Panaque). However there is the possibility this L-number represents the young Hemiancistrus medians.
Habitat Information
Distribution	South America: Rupununi River, Essequibo River and Takutu and Ireng Rivers (Negro River drainage) along the Guyana-Brazil border.
