Type Locality Rio Paiaiá, into headwaters of Rio Itapicurú, about 11°S, 40°30'W, Bahia State, Brazil.

Etymology Aspidoras: From the Greek aspis, meaning shield and doras, meaning skin; in reference to the bony plates. This specific epithet refers to its spotted(maculosus=spotted or dappled) appearance.
