Type Locality | Small creeks tributary of Lomela River, 2°00'-2°19'S, 22°58'E-23°15'E, northern Sankuru, Lomela, Democratic Republic of Congo. |
Etymology | The Greek, glanis meaning catfish and paradoxos meaning strange or contrary to expectation. Gender is masculine. From the Latin cauda meaning tail and vitta meaning ribbon or stripe, in reference to the strongly developed caudal saddle and bar pattern of this species. |

Identification | The most notable feature for identification is the incomplete lateral line, depending on the species of Paradoxoglanis only extending 28 to 50% of the distance from the posterior of the body as opposed to Malapterurus which extends completely down the body to near the caudal peduncle.
The adipose fin also begins in front of the posterior end of the anal fin base, in Malapterurus it begins behind this point. Strongly developed caudal saddle and bar pattern, especially in juveniles, saddle often fainter in adults. Lateral line relatively long for the genus 45 to 50% of the Standard length. |
