Type Locality Río Tahuamanu from Boca Nareuda to below Cachuelita, 11°18'S, 68°44'W, Pando State, Bolivia.
Etymology (Greek)Megas, Megalos=Great + (Greek)nema=filament. amaxanthum refers to the distribution of the species in the Amazon basin and its relationship to the species M. xanthum.
