|Type Locality||Río Casiquiare, 73 kilometers northeast of San Carlos de Río Negro, 2°21'09"N, 66°34'31"W, Amazonas, Venezuela.|
|Etymology||Greek, pseudes = false + Greek, agkistron = hook or barb. "False Ancistrus", meaning that it is like an Ancistrus, but yet not quite. This specific epithet refers to the hypertrophied odontodes (pecten=quill) of the snout, pectoral spine and evertible cheek plates plus the fact that one adult male was presumably collected while caring(genitor=father) for a large brood of young.|

|Identification||Pseudancistrus is the only genus of the Ancistrini (former Ancistrinae) that lacks evertible cheek plates. Because of this characteristic, it has at times been placed in the Hypostominae.|
|Sexing||Males possess greatly elongated evertible cheek odontodes as well as slightly elongated odontodes on the pectoral spines and snout.|
|Distribution||South America: main channel of the Rio Orinoco above Raudales Autures and Rio Casiquaire in Venezuela. |
